Pre work on moving to self hosting
-
Hi
Am planning to move on to self hosted, but would need to do some pre work on the same. Currently I have the domain (that I wanted to use for the blog) at my smugmug photo hosting site. Images at my current wordpress blog has links with this domain eg. http://www.liketheocean.com/portfolio/all/xxxx.jpg.As I work on the new hosting, I would need to get the domain[www.liketheocean.com] moved on to bluehost. But the moment I do it all my images in the current blog would become orphaned. Am expecting couple of days to get all things set.
So in the interim , just to make sure I dont mess up with the current posts, below is what am planning to do.
1. Export all the posts and download to xml
2. Rename all http://www.liketheocean.com.* to sathya.smugmg.com.* [this is the default domain out there and is active]
3. Delete all current posts
4. Import the updated xml fileQuestions :
Is this a fool proof method ?
Is there an option to bulk delete all the posts in the blog here at wordpress ?
Are there any downsides to this ?
If this is not an effective way, what are the alternates ?Thanks for ur time !!!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I would set up a test site and set it to private to import into first just to make sure everything works right. I would use a nonsense name like test1984.wordpress.com or something like that so you don’t possibly take a name that someone might want as a blog. That way you can make sure the file works before you delete all your existing posts and such from the current site.
Nothing is ever foolproof, but having the test site to try things on takes one wildcard out of the deck.

thesacredpath – will try to use a test site as u suggested prior to updating the current blog. Also noticed that the posts can be deleted from the dashboard. Will use caution. Thanks again !

You are welcome, and always work on a copy of the export file and keep the original tucked away just in case.
