Preferred domain: What is preferable?

  Dear all:

  It seems that it is advisable to select a preferred domain in Google Webmaster Tools, but I’m already confused with the diversity of options: www, http, https, domainname.org, etc.

  So, what is the option you recommend to avoid problems? What steps should I take?
