  I was about to upgrade my account, but then saw that I should pay the whole year immediately. Can I pay on a monthly basis just like subscriptions in Spotify and other apps?

  No, it’s not possible to pay on a monthly basis. Your WordPress.com plans are based on a yearly subscription that renews automatically.
