Premium domains?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I went to upgrade to premium and it lists the features of the plan it says, “Get a free custom domain name (example.com) with this plan to use for your website. Does not apply to premium domains.”

What do they mean by premium domains? Does that mean I don’t get to chose a free domain name with the premium plan…..

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi thehomeplaceweb.

A premium domain name is a domain that is already owned by a person or registry. Its cost can be significantly more than a typical domain purchase — anywhere from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars — due to its perceived higher value and therefore not included int the Premium Plan.

Basically if your domain you want is not registered yet by someone else, you can get it through the Premium Plan.

You can use this website to see if a domain is available to register by you, https://instantdomainsearch.com/

Ok, so I just took the plunge and upgraded to the Premium plan, but it didn’t automatically switch my domain to lose the wordpress.com part? or even ask me if I wanted to chose a new domain? Now it says on my stats page, there is a button that says claim free domain? What does that mean?
If I press the button to claim it will I then have two domains, http://www.thehomeplaceweb.wordpress.com and http://www.thehomeplaceweb.com? Help – I am mixed up now!

  • You can follow the instructions here. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/, how to register the new domain and make it the primary domain for your blog

On WordPress.com, you can register a custom domain (for example, yourgroovydomain.com) and use it instead of your site’s current address (such as yourgroovysite.wordpress.com). Your old address will still work, but we will automatically redirect traffic from your old address to your new one.

This is what I want to do, get rid of the wordpress.com part, but how do I do it. When I click on the claim your free domain name, it gives me 3 choices, two I don’t want, and one to transfer from another site, but if I type in http://www.thehomeplaceweb.com it says it is available, and asks me to register it. Then it is asking me if I want email? Do I? Is email just the regular email thing in the contact spot on the menu, or is it something else? How do i register it? Is nothing ever
    simple?

  • It is referring to if you would like an email address with your custom domain, for example (email visible only to moderators and staff). When it is asking if you would like email, you will be able to purchase a G Suite (formerly known as Google Apps) account, but you can always add that later.

The other option you have regarding email it to use Email Forwarding.

For example: if your email address is (email visible only to moderators and staff), and you have the domain thehomeplaceweb.com in your blog, you can set up (email visible only to moderators and staff) using Email Forwarding. Emails sent to (email visible only to moderators and staff) will arrive at is (email visible only to moderators and staff).

Well it seems to have transferred all the data over from http://www.thehomeplaceweb.wordpress.com to my new primary domain http://www.thehomeplaceweb.com – so far so good – although I got an email saying it may take 72hrs? But I was curious about this statement re privacy – it automatically made it private at no cost as part of the plan for this year. But is the privacy something I will have to renew every year? Not sure what they mean by the next 6 months?

Note: If your domain name expires within the next 6 months you will also need to renew the domain registration and mapping in order to make your registration information private. Once you renew the domain with private registration added the privacy will start immediately and the domain will be renewed for another year from its current expiration date.

Also, it did something called domain mapping but didn’t charge me for it, it was on the bill I printed off, but I don’t recall selecting it on the screen – is this just a feature redirecting people to my new domain from the old? Does it expire, ie will it have to be renewed at some future time also? I can certainly see where WordPress will be adding extra money on for additional features – when all I wanted to do was get rid of those ads! Where can I check the privacy of my domain on the screen to make sure it is there? pS. Thank you for your help so far!

  • My pleasure! The domain registration will only need to be renewed in a years time on 2019-02-06 and the domain mapping that redirect users to your domain is included in your plan and will be renewed when you pay for the next year of your WordPress.com plan.

The domain privacy will need to be renewed on the same date, and it should be around US$8 (price might change in the future) for a year.

To check that the privacy is enabled, you can follow this link, https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=www.thehomeplaceweb.com. It is currently enabled as I can not see any of your personal details that you used to register the domain.

Thanks so much! You have been very helpful!

  • Hi there,

Just a clarification. @epoolman said, “A premium domain name is a domain that is already owned by a person or registry. “

This is not correct. A premium domain is a domain that costs more than the regular retail price for a particular extension because it is rare (two- and three-letter domains) or a highly sought-after domain (example: football.any_tld_you_care_to_mention).

So what it means when we say premium domains are not included in plans is that you can only use the free domain in your plan to buy a domain that is available at the regular retail price for that domain extension.

If a domain already belongs to someone else it can’t be registered at all, regardless of whether it’s premium or not. If it’s already registered you can just buy it from the current owner in a private transaction, provided they’re willing to sell it to you.

Registries don’t own domains. A registry manages a particular TLD (domain name extension), and determines the retail and premium pricing of individual domains for the TLD it manages.
