premium upgrade vs premium theme??
-
I currently have a free theme. What is the difference between getting a premium upgrade and buying a premium theme? Some premium themes are more expensive and others less expensive than the cost of upgrading to premium, so I’m guessing there is a difference. Does that mean if I upgrade to premium, I still need to buy a premium theme? Then what is the point of upgrading to premium? Very confusing!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi
The WordPress Premium Plan (upgrade) is made for you to have access to more features, like more space for videos, a custom domain, no ads on your blog, and so on.
https://store.wordpress.com/plans/The premium themes are non-free themes. That’s all, I guess. No connection between them.

The Premium upgrade plan gives you additional features, as @pedger said, including the ability to customise your theme’s CSS. However, it does not include any premium themes and it has to be renewed annually. The Premium themes are for if you don’t want to use or customise any of the free themes. They are once-off purchases, so after buying them you can use them for as long as the blog exists or until the theme becomes outdated. Additionally you gain access to that theme’s dedicated support forum where the theme designers themselves provide support for any issues you might have with the theme. You can see here for more information: https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/premium-themes/

Thank you very much for the replies! It’s already much clearer (wordpress folks, I really think you should make that more explicit. I spent quite some time on your FAQ trying to find an answer to this simple question).
So, if I bought a really good premium theme, how likely is is that I would also need a premium upgrade? Don’t premium themes generally also allow you more flexibility with functionalities?
Thanks in advance for this further help!
Matt

Premium themes tend to be much more customisable than free themes, though it varies from theme to theme. The theme support documents for the various premium themes should give you more information on what each theme offers, and if you want more information on a specific theme before you buy you can always post your questions in the general themes forum where the themes staff will see it.
But if you want to do anything that will require editing the CSS you will still need the Custom Design upgrade included in the Premium plan. Same goes for the other premium features like , or any of the premium plan features like No Ads, Space Upgrade or VideoPress.
Also, neither premium themes nor the premium upgrade plan will allow you to install plugins as we can’t use those on WordPress.com.

When you purchase premium theme, you get lots of add-on plugins and other stuff which are bundled with the theme. You will find plenty of free themes within wordpress repository. However, if you are not satisfied with it, you can surely go for premium wordpress themes. Premium themes are indeed premium.

Thanks. “premium themes are indeed premium”. Ok, but they don’t provide the things that a premium upgrade gives, right? Bizarre that wordpress uses the same term for two different things. Very confusing (on purpose, maybe?)

Hogwash! You are posting incorrect answers. Go back to http://wordpress.ORG/support and answer questions there. We provide support here only for WordPress.COM hosted blogs.
We do not provide support for WordPress.ORG software installs.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
