Premium vs business plan?
-
Hi, I’ve updated and maintained site content on a WP built site quite a bit in the past for a previous company I worked for, however the initial site development was done by a very skilled developer! I’m taking the leap and building a site from scratch for my own new start up company, and I am trying to decide if the Business Plan would be better to cater for all my needs, or if the Premium Plan would be sufficient. Integrating Google Analytics and various SEO tools will be important, as well as the ability to use a limited amount of CSS coding. Perhaps if I started out on the Premium Plan, I could upgrade to the Business Plan if required – is this a seamless process? Any views would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there!
Upgrading means access to more goodies! It does not change your site. Paying for features you don’t use does not make good business sense, but should they be needed you can certainly upgrade when the necessity arises!Google Analytics comes with the Business plan only.
Search engine Optimization help is here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/seo/
and since you are starting from scratch you can integrate these hints as you build.Hope that helped some!

Great, thank you both for your reply, that is very helpful. Is there much difference between the number of themes that I can choose from with the premium and business? It says for premium there is hundreds and business there are unlimited…what does this really mean in terms of themes available to me?

There are no premium themes included in the business plan.
re: purchasing WordPress.COM upgrades
WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/
We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.
Details:
There are no trial upgrades, no monthly payment plans and no bulk deal upgrades. We are billed annually and we must pay for all upgrades in full at the time of purchase after selecting a plan.
Also note that purchase orders are not accepted.
Each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed. (The only exceptions are one time upgrades for premium themes and guided transfers.)
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.
WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/How domain mapping works
What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/Premium upgrades do not include any premium themes which are all individually priced one time upgrades.
The Business upgrade which is the only plan that includes Google analytics also includes access to all premium themes. However, note that there is no e-commerce capability under any plan here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/small-business-website-1?replies=2#post-2804631.Before you upgrade
Make sure you read the comparison very closely do you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/Also read Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

what does this really mean in terms of themes available to me?
Premium upgrades do not include any premium themes which are all individually priced one time upgrades.
The Business upgrade which is the only plan that includes Google analytics also includes access to all premium themes. However, note that there is no e-commerce capability under any plan here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/small-business-website-1?replies=2#post-2804631.
The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
We cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes. There is no FTP access to any wordpress.com sites. See:
Themes »Uploading Custom Themes
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/P.S. Also be keenly aware that you cannot transfer any theme from https://wordpress.com/themes/ which is licensed and adapted to run on WordPress.COM software to a WordPress.ORG site, and visa versa. The two run on different software and have different versions of themes with the same names. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Your site content, once indexed by search engines, will appear in Google search, unless you make the site private.
Search engines aren’t attracted to sites that are page based. Sites that are post based where publication of posts, not pages is frequent are more attractive to them.
re: search engine discoverability
It can take weeks for search engines to index your site content. Please read this support doc https://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/ so you know we have no control over search engines positioning or appearance in the SERPs (search engine page results).
To verify blog ownership of a WordPress.com hosted blog with the major search engines you must use this process > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/
Note: Even if you do not verify the blog the content will be indexed by search engines so don’t feel panicky about this please.WordPress.com automatically supplies sitemaps for our blogs to search engines – we do nothing. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/#xml-sitemaps-for-search-engines
To gain search engine attention, I recommend that you start publishing posts (not pages) https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ frequently. That’s because it can take weeks for search engines to index content in a new blog and/or to re-index content under a new URL.

Sorry your reply doesn't make sense…you said that there are no premium themes included in the business plan but later down the page it says….”The Business upgrade which is the only plan that includes Google analytics also includes access to all premium themes.”
-
What I posted makes sense and that is not what I said. I said:
Premium upgrades do not include any premium themes which are all individually priced one time upgrades.
The Business upgrade which is the only plan that includes Google analytics also includes access to all premium themes. However, note that there is no e-commerce capability under any plan here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/small-business-website-1?replies=2#post-2804631.

Perhaps if I started out on the Premium Plan, I could upgrade to the Business Plan if required – is this a seamless process?
When you upgrade again from Personal to Premium or from Premium to Business you pay the difference https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/domain-mapping-almost-impossible-to-understand-how-it-works?replies=4#post-2874012

Hi,
Thanks so much for all the really helpful information that you posted in response to my question. There was lots of information to go through but I am a lot clearer now….
I am at the very starting stage of creating a site and in deciding which plan to sign up to. In relation to themes, my question was that under “Premium Plan”, it says access to ‘hundreds of free themes’, but under the “Business Plan” it says ‘unlimited premium themes’. Does signing up to the Business Plan mean that I have access to a far greater number of higher quality themes than what is available with the Premium Plan?
Thanks. -
Hi there!
Themes are really just window dressing for your page or blog! They vary by layout, included features, and ability to “customize” them with your own HTML or CSS!The questions you have to ask yourself are
- How much time do you have available to “tweak” your pages?
- If you are not a “code guru” do you have the time to learn HTML/CSS, or the resources to hire one?
- Changing from one theme to another may mean having to spend money and time re-formatting things to regain aesthetics, again how much time do you want to spend doing this?
In my opinion, and it is ONLY my opinion, it makes more sense to devote some research time to the various themes available for the various plans. Pick one that is appealing to you and has functionality to meet your present and projected needs. Look through all the information and demos on that particular theme’s pages. When you decide on “THE ONE”, go for it with gusto!
I know when i am looking at a business related page i want it to make sense, be visually appealing, and present information without being too “busy”. I also appreciate consistency – if i return to a page i would like to be able to find what i am looking for without having to figure out a whole new navigation system because everything changed since my last visit.
How does this relate to selecting a plan? No matter what plan you choose, there really are hundreds of themes available to you! Premium themes are available for purchase. Again i recommend some research, then commit to one theme that you can be happy with.
More important is making the decision of what plan meets your needs.
Hope this helps!

@oneillesther –
Just to clarify further, all the Premium themes on WordPressdotcom are included in the Business plan, as long as you renew the Business Plan upgrade annually. If you choose a Premium theme under the Business Plan and then downgrade to a Premium or Personal Plan, you will need to purchase the Premium theme separately if you wish to continue using it.
I think we’ve pretty much exhausted all the available possibilities. :) Thanks everyone.
@oneillesther Let us know if you have further questions about this.
