Premium WP Features question

  • Unknown's avatar

I haven’t found answer to my question- which is: if I buy credits for custom css, can I import my own theme in its entirety, one not available through wordpress.com, or can you only modify the stylesheet of the sandbox theme?
Also, can you bring new page formats and other php files in? If the answer is yes, how does the process look like?
Is it possible to have a full fledged wordpress theme with any plugins and widgets available? If yes, how do you load them on the WP server?
    Thanks.

if I buy credits for custom css, can I import my own theme in its entirety…

Answer “no”. That’s not possible. Understand that wordpress.com is a multiuser blogging platform. We do not have FTP access and we cannot upload themes and or plugins. Our blogs do not have individual plugin tabs.

The wordpress themes on the internet are all coded to run on free standing wordpress.org software. Our software is different and every theme here has been modified and adapted from the wordpress.org coding to run on wordpress.com software.

or can you only modify the stylesheet of the sandbox theme?

You can edit the CSS stylessheet for any theme found here > Appearance > Themes and that includes Sandbox which you can create a skin for.

Also, can you bring new page formats and other php files in? If the answer is yes, how does the process look like?

Absolutely not. We cannot access or edit the underlying HTML and php in our templates at all. We cannot make any changes to functionality.

The Custom CSS Upgrade allows you to use your own CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) to customize the appearance of your blog. CSS allows you to change fonts, colors, borders, backgrounds, and even the layout of the blog.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, this upgrade is not recommended to those who lack css editing experience. Those who do buy the upgrade are basically working on their own, as we have only a couple of volunteers who infrequently with CSS.

Bottom line: Do not buy the upgrade unless you have a working knowledge of CSS. Before buying the upgrade, you can go to appearance > edit CSS and wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try out changes before you buy the upgrade.

Ok timethief, thanks for your exhausting answers.
It doesn’t look like I am going to be using wordpress.com any time soon for my website. It’s too bad because you actually could provide all these services and make money off of it. I simply don’t want to bother with finding a host and site maintenance.
It would be a good idea if WP could provide a space for such advanced features- I’d be more than happy to pay for them.
Take a look at what tumbler has to offer- they may as well outpace you. It would be sad because I do like WordPress better.

So you do not have a wordpress.COM blog ***headesk***

If you did comprehend the differences between free standing wordpress.org software installs and this multiuser wordpress.com blogging platform I do not believe you would still persist in stating that you think wordpress.com ought to allow us to access and edit the html and php in the underlying templates. That’s not possible on a muituser blogging platform. If it was then one blogger could edit as you want to do, and every other wp.com blogger with the same theme would have a blog that had likewise been edited.
