pressed this photograph question

    Hi

If I use the press this button on a site and so it shows a photograph on my blog. The the original site deletes the photograph (or the website dies and so the link becomes invalid) what will happen to the picture shown on my site, will it still show, or will it be replaced by a “no image placeholder”?

    Thanks

    S

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Some pictures seem to have an embed code and others do not, would this affect the outcome should the original picture be deleted or the link no longer valid.

Hi, can anyone advise on this, I still have not been able to find out the answer.

Generally speaking, if you are hotlinking images from an off-WordPress.com website, WPcom uses Photon to cache images here (but not in your Media Library) so that your site loads faster.

I’m not certain what happens if those images are deleted from the site they were originally cached from. Hopefully Staff will be able to clarify when they get to this thread. (I added the correct tag for Staff to “modlook;” there’s no hypen needed.)

Also, when you use Press This, I believe you have the option to insert an image from the website in question. Can you give us a use case and the steps you took to insert an image using Press This? And if you can point to a post where you’ve already done this, that would help too.

If you hotlink images as justjennifer described (so the image isn’t uploaded to your site’s media library) when the image is removed from the website it’s hosted on, it will eventually disappear from your site.

When you use Press This, however, you have the option to insert an image from the original site — that uploads the image to your media library so it will always be available (as long as you don’t delete the image from your media library).

If there’s a particular post where you used Press This and you’d like to double check the image(s) there, please give a link to that post and we can take a look. :)

Hi, How do you choose the option so that it loads to your media site? I found an image at http://www.gosocial.co/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/02_Pic025.jpg and when I choose press this the code is …

    Source: 02_Pic025.jpg (JPEG Image, 880 × 1322 pixels) – Scaled (79%)

but I can see nothing that allow me to choose to add that to me media folder, If i save as a draft and then recheck my media folder it isnt there

    Hi there,

Thanks for giving that example. Press This is designed to be used with news articles or blog posts, rather than individual images one their own. When you use Press This, it automatically creates that “Source” link back to the original article — so when you use it with an image, it will create a link back to the original image. (That’s always just a link back to the source, so it won’t upload anything to your site on its own.)

Near the top of the Press This editor window, you’ll see a thumbnail image that’s the image you are trying to share. When you click on that image, it will add the image to your post and upload the image to your site’s media library. That way you can share a copy of the image along with the link to the original.
