pretend I’m stupid
-
I’ve set up a blog (randyvaughan.wordpress.com) for the sole purpose of having a place for people to comment on a book I’ve written. All I was trying to do was have that “home page” you see initially (is that the “static” page?) another page for the posts (I set up a second page called “posts”), and then I suppose there has to be an archive. I really made a mess of things yesterday (11/06) and am hoping someone will be gracious enough to just spell it out for me. Widgets and tags and everything else…oh my! No interest in posting pictures, music, or anything else….Thanks very much.

To summarize: all of the formatting you wanted to set up yourself is already built into wordpress.com blogs, you’ve just got the labels backwards. TT’s links will guide you through the whole process.

My blog is a book as well.
There is information on formatting a book as a blog in the FAQ, for example on static pages and on how to place things in conventional book order, rather than classical blogging order which always has the latest entries at the top.
There’s good advice in those pages, but in the end I’ve pretty much ignored it. My site is posted up in blog order, compensated with a drop-down menu using the Chapters as categories in the sidebar. And I’ve left a few signposts pointing clearly to the start, as well.
I may have got that wrong, but it’s hard to say, and it’s up to you.
What I’ve learned about blogging is that it takes time to build an audience, so you have to find a way to give your project that time it needs, by posting blog-style.
Simple logic also says that you should remove the clutter, photos, music, widgets … and leave the text.
But on the screen, it’s a blog, and so I’ve decided for now to make it look like a blog.
Recently I’ve added pictures, too – because they help to break up the text. And because it’s really hard to read a whole book of text, online. Bite-size chunks work better.
If I’m at a new site, then typically I’m scanning the page to get an idea of the context. Pictures help out there enormously.
As I said, I don’t know if I’ve got it right, or even halfway right, and I’d be fascinated to hear other thoughts on this.
Good luck with your project.

Didn’t want y’all to think your help was unappreciated, or in vain. It was neither. Slowed down, took it step-by-step, and had to sacrifice only two chickens, but I got it. Or rather, I’ve gotten it as far as I want to go with it for now. So thanks very much for the guidance, and patience.

Provided your blog is not “private” you may want to link your wordpress.com username to it. It’s easy to do. -> Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile
You will see two columns. Go to the right hand side column “Contact Info” the second field down is “Website”. Type your wordpress.com blog’s url into it http://randyvaughan.wordpress.com and then click “Update Profile” to save the change.
Cheers :-)
