Pretty basic question about stats.

I don’t have a static front page to my blog. I just have my blog and my archives. I have 204 views of my blog for the day. No comments given. There are 33 referrers listed, about 66 searches and about 85 views of the 25 top posts for the day. I’ve never had a blog before and I’m wondering what people who know more about this subject would take from that information. I hope to turn this into a business but I’m a little behind the curve.

Any insight would be gratefully received.

    Thanks. :)

I’m no expert in interpreting the stats but I do know that if you’re wanting to turn your blog into a business, wp.com is the wrong place to be. See the TOS. And better to switch sooner rather than later, because it always entails some loss of traffic.

rosclarke. Please explain why WP is the wrong place??

You’re not allowed to run a commercial enterprise on wp.com. You have to use wp.org, I think, for that. It’s in the terms, as rosclarke said.

For the record, I just reviewed the TOS and nothing I’m planning on is verboten.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were intending to make the blog itself a business, rather than use it for business information which is fine.

On your stats, I wonder what sort of answers you’re looking for? The thing that immediately strikes me is the comparatively high number of referrers – which sounds like a good thing. Other people are linking to your blog.

I’m not sure how to interpret what it is I’m reading. I’ve never blogged before, and so I don’t know what an experienced blogger would be seeing in those statistics. My blog is just a couple months old, so I’m wondering about the number of views that don’t come referrers. Where are they coming from? Do they paint a picture?

No, they probably have your blog address cached on their browser so they don’t follow an actual link to your blog. The 205 views include all the different things people will click on your blog, too. So a single visitor will only be referred once, but then might account for several hits.
