Pretty Permalinks Went Ugly
-
My blog posts have always showed pretty permalinks but the permalinks for the last two posts are ugly, showing a date and number instead of the post title. I haven’t made any changes to the way I post and I don’t see a permalink option in my dashboard settings menu. Any idea how I can fix this?
Thanks! The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi booksicantshutupabout,
The URL for those posts can be changed from the editor by clicking on the link icon next to the title. I’ve made a screenshot of the option for you:

I hope this helps!

Hi @gemmacevans- if the user changes those links, then what happens when someone clicks on the links that have already been shared via Publicize or in the Recent Posts widget? Thanks!

Hi @justjennifer,
That’s a good point — I just tested this and visiting the previous post URL redirects me to the new one, so there shouldn’t be any issues there.

Thanks Gemma, I was able to edit the links. I’m still wondering, why they would automatically be pretty for earlier posts then suddenly change format? Any thoughts? Is there some setting I need to revisit?
Thank you!

That’s great to hear! This usually happens when a draft post is saved without a title — there are no characters so numbers are used instead. Adding a title afterwards doesn’t automatically update the URL so it needs to be done manually.

That’s exactly what happened. I just wrote a new post with a title and the permalink did have the title, no numbers. Thanks so much for the help!
