Prevent new user account creation

I have had two rashes of multiple “unique” new user accounts being created back to back over 24-ish hour periods. Currently all new user accounts are set to “Sepectator” role.
There are only two “offical” user accounts on my site.
At one time I required registration to comment but disabled that some time ago by deploying Akismet. All these new user accounts have nonsense email addresses or nonsense websites or both.
Question: how do I prevent everyone from creating accounts?

Hi there,
It seems this issue is regarding your self-hosted WordPress website.
To disable new users from registering, login to your site and visit the General Settings page.
In the settings page, you’ll find the Membership option where you can uncheck the Anyone can register box to disable registration.
