Prevent sending newsletters for specific posts

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’m considering moving my newsletter from Mailchimp to WordPress, but I am having difficulty understanding the capability. I don’t need fancy formatting options, but I do need to control when a newsletter is sent.

Not all posts on my blog are intended to go out as newsletters. Is there a setting where I can prevent one from being sent? Given the current setup I would expect a radio button here that says “Nobody.” I can’t seem to find any details about preventing a published post from being sent to subscribers when I hit publish though.

    What are my options?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello,

Thank you for reaching out! You can indeed have detailed control over which blog posts are sent as newsletters when using WordPress.com.

Your best option for implementing what you’re looking for would be to use the Jetpack plugin’s Email Subscriptions feature. Good news! Jetpack is built in to WordPress.com out of the box.

When creating or editing a post, you will have an option under “Jetpack” -> “Sharing” (on the right-hand side of your editing screen) to enable or disable sending that specific post as an email to your subscribers.

If you don’t see the Jetpack section, please make sure that you have Jetpack installed and connected to your WordPress.com account. You can find instructions on how to do so in our guide here: https://jetpack.com/support/installing-jetpack/.

Jetpack’s Email Subscriptions feature documentation is located here: https://jetpack.com/support/subscriptions/.

However, please note that not all themes may support this option. Therefore, if you can’t find it, the theme could be the issue.

Remember that you can test different themes on your WordPress.com site without affecting your live site with the Live Preview option. This allows you to see how your site will look with the new theme (and its options) before activating it. Here is a guide on how to use the Live Preview: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/#preview-a-theme

If Jetpack’s Email Subscription feature doesn’t meet your needs or if you want more advanced newsletter capabilities, I recommend considering plugins such as the Newsletter or MailPoet plugins. These plugins provide more detailed control and additional newsletter features. Here’s some information on both:

    Newsletter: https://wordpress.org/plugins/newsletter/

    MailPoet: https://wordpress.org/plugins/mailpoet/

I hope this information helps! If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

The plugins can be used as part of the business plan on WordPress.com.

Thanks for the reply! Is this the sharing option under Jetpack that you’re referring to?

If so, it looks like the only related sharing options are social-media related. Nothing about emailing subscribers or the newsletter?

Should there be an option for the newsletter or emailing subscribers in this list?

  • Hey there,

    Thanks for reaching back out.

This list above relates to Publicize and sharing to other third parties, rather than the native newsletter functionality.

The subscribers could be found via Users > Subscribers and there would also be more detail in who is a paid subscriber via Tools > Earn > Newsletter.

This guide here goes through the steps of how to set that up: https://wordpress.com/support/paid-newsletters/

Out of curiosity, what’s spurring on the decision to move away from Mailchimp to WordPress? With some more context, I can look to provide some advice that could help further.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the WordPress Newsletter may not offer what I am looking for.

I write blog posts and newsletters. I still publish my newsletters as a blog post. Like this one.

I’d like for only those posts intended to be a newsletter to be sent out. It looked like WordPress.com’s newsletter functionality might do this. I thought it might be similar to how Ghost handles publishing posts/newsletters.

As for why I am looking to move from Mailchimp—Their recent pricing changes take me out of the free plan. It doesn’t look like that’s been enforced yet, but I don’t expect to last much longer. Also, Mailchimp has become a lot more than just newsletters and I don’t really need all the bells and whistles it offers.

I was also hoping WordPress.com would solve my issues, because I’m over my monthly visits with my current host, Flywheel. I could move my blog over to WordPress.com and use the Newsletter feature to send my newsletter.

Also, I don’t really care about the paid newsletter functionality—it’s not something I’ll use. I just want the ability to control what posts are sent as newsletters.

  • I can understand that! There isn’t directly a button/toggle to control whether a post is sent as a newsletter or not, but normally private posts shouldn’t be sent by email. Otherwise a workaround we’ve previously tested that does work for blogs hosted on WordPress.com (and this was before the introduction of our paid newsletter function) was as follows:

    1. Prepare your post as a draft
    2. Set your blog to private in the Settings > General section:
      https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
    3. Publish the post
    4. Set your site back to public, after publishing the post

That said, if you’re looking for an alternative solution, the Mailpoet plugin offers a way of segmenting your new post notification emails based on taxonomy- that could potentially be useful too. It looks like they also let you use the “private post” function to not send a post by email.

Thanks! I can see that working as a potential work around.

In the meantime please, send my feedback to the WordPress.com product team—As I would love to determine what posts are shared with subscribers when I click publish. That may mean not sharing the post at all.
