Preview Error
-
When I try to preview an unpublished draft post, I receive an error saying:
ErrorOops! That page can’t be found.
I use Firefox as my main browser, but I also tried with Safari and still receive an error. I would prefer to keep the theme I am using currently.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
I’m sorry to hear about the issue you’re facing with previewing a draft post. I tried opening a draft post in the preview, and it worked for me. Can you try clicking here and let me know if you still get an error? (The link only works for you as the site owner).
If you are having trouble with a different draft, can you share the link to the draft post with me?
Thanks!

Hello! I do not receive the error when I click on the link you provided. However, when I’m on my own tab in the browser I still receive the error. Not sure what the difference is between your link and my own?

Hi there,
I can see that the draft we were previously talking about has already been published.
I’ve checked the next draft post and the preview worked on my end in Firefox. This is the link I got when I previewed that draft on my end. Could you check if it works for you and if it is different from the link you get when you preview the draft on your end?
Thanks! -
I’m experiencing the same problem with WordPress Preview, using Safari Version 17.1.2 (19616.2.9.11.12) on my iMac with Sonoma 14.1.2 (23B92).
After making changes to a WordPress post, I’ll Save it and then select “Preview in a new tab”. Instead of seeing a Preview, I’m getting the message “Oops! That page can’t be found.” The Preview link is: https://philperkins.photography/?p=123086&preview_id=123086&preview_nonce=8996126a2b&preview=true&_thumbnail_id=123088
However, if I’m on the Admin page of (all) Posts and click on “Preview” for the same specific post (listed above), the Preview displays correctly – at this Preview link: https://perkinsdesigns.wordpress.com/?p=123086&preview=true
Is there something I can do to restore the Preview functionality – using the newest version of Safari?
Note: I had been using the Brave browser, and the “Preview in a new tab” function worked as expected. However, the same aforementioned trouble was also encountered using the DuckDuckGo browser…
Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Hello,
Thank you for sharing the details of the issue you’re experiencing with the WordPress preview feature. It seems that the problem might be related to browser compatibility. Does preview work as expected if you use a browser other than Safari, such as Chrome or Firefox?
Also, using Safari, what if you were to log in to WordPress via a Private Window (File>New Private Window) instead of via a regular browser window? You will need to sign into WordPress.com since your username/password will not be stored automatically, but once you are in your account, can you preview at the link you have shared?
Thanks for the additional info!

Hi staff-totoro,
Thank you for the reply. Yes, using Brave as my browser, the WordPress preview function works perfectly.
Trying Firefox, the WordPress preview function also works fine.
Trying Safari, using both the regular & a Private Window, the WordPress preview function doesn’t work.
Trying DuckDuckGo, using both the regular & a Fire Window, the WordPress preview function doesn’t work.
I have noticed that a mac Sonoma update (14.2.1) is scheduled for tonight, which may fix the Safari browser issue?
Thanks again.

Hey there,
Thanks for the update and for testing the different browsers. Please let us know if the MacOS update resolves the Safari preview issue.
Thanks!

Hi staff-dragon,
No change. Safari was updated, but the WordPress preview function still doesn’t work – yielding the same (aforementioned) message – both while browsing in a regular or Private Window.
I also tested both of these with Safari extensions (Ad blocker) disabled…with the same results.

@flyingdisc, thanks for your continued efforts in testing. To troubleshoot the issue further, could you please verify your Safari preferences? Check under Privacy settings and see if “Prevent cross-site tracking” is enabled. If it is, please disable it, clear your browser cache, and then recheck the preview. My suspicion is that this setting might be causing the problem, considering backend URLs use the *.wordpress.com format while the preview utilizes your custom domain. While I can’t confirm this as the definitive issue, it’s worth ruling out, especially since the DuckDuckGo browser is known for its anti-tracking focus.
Keep us posted on the results!

Thanks for responding. As suggested, I tried this with Safari using both a regular window & Private Window. The WordPress preview function continues not to display when using a regular window with Safari – but, with the “Prevent cross-site tracking” disabled, it does display using a Private Window. Not sure what this means?

Hi again,
Safari has a lot of security settings in place as mentioned, which is well-intentioned but does have the effect of breaking some “good” functionality as a result. We’ve found that some can be deactivated but also there are some protections in place that cannot be circumvented so easily. I’ve reported your issue to our devs, who are trying to find a workaround. In the meantime you may need to continue previewing from the All Posts view, and we are happy to update you here when we have more info.
Thanks for your patience!
