Preview link not working

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, this is the new thread for the preview link issue.

Copied from your response in my original thread about issue related to commenting on other blog posts. I didn’t know how much of the other previous notes I should copy, so I just copied this new one.

These comments now refer to preview issue. You asked: What happens when you click on the preview links here? The preview URL you’re seeing seems different from the ones made there, so can you share how you’re getting to Preview?

My answer: When I click on the link you gave me above, it sends me to my complete list of posts. If I select the preview link without going in to edit the post, it sends me to the correct post preview. If, however, I go in to edit the post and then click on the icon that allows for previewing the post while in edit mode, I get the “oops” page. Usually, I can preview changes as I edit, using this approach. When I schedule the post, I get the usual “preview” your post here link down in the lower left. If I click on that, I also get the “oops” response. So I’m concerned that once the post is published, readers will only see the “oops” page when they click through to read the post. I have unscheduled the post until I get this fixed. I’m wondering if the easiest thing to do would be to copy the entire post into a new post and delete this old one?

    Thank you! Jilanne

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I cleared cache and cookies and it works now. But now I can’t get the preview to work on my own blog post. If I’m in the post, it won’t preview, and when I scheduled it and clicked on the preview post link, it says that page isn’t found. But if I’m looking at the list of scheduled posts, I can click on preview there and see it. I’m concerned that when the post gets published, it will tell my readers that the page can’t be found. I’ve logged out of WP and logged back in, and I’ve cleared the browser history. I’ve also logged into WP from a different browser, and the same thing happens. Can you please tell me what’s wrong? This is the link I get when I preview from the list of scheduled posts: https://jilannehoffmann.wordpress.com/?p=9307&preview=true

    Everything looks normal.

This is what I get when I’m in the post and trying to preview it:

    https://jilannehoffmann.com/?p=9307&preview_id=9307&preview_nonce=c092e13d4a&preview=true&_thumbnail_id=9314

It says “oops! page not found…”

    Please help!

    Thank yoU!

    Jilanne

  • Hi Jilanne,

That’s weird. I can preview both of your scheduled posts either from the list view or the editor.

What are the browsers you’ve tried and what extensions have you installed?

  • Unknown's avatar

In Chrome, I have Onepass, Google Docs offline, and Evernote.

In Safari, I just have Onepass because I really only use Chrome and was temporarily using Safari to test my ability to comment on other blogs.

  • Hi there,

When I visit https://jilannehoffmann.com/?p=9307&preview_id=9307&preview_nonce=c092e13d4a&preview=true&_thumbnail_id=9314 I’ve noticed that I do see the “oops, not found” message, but only briefly, and it is replaced with rendered preview content if I wait a second or two. If you open this link in a tab and leave it for a bit, does the content eventually appear?

Also it seems that Chrome is your preferred browser, what if you try to open an Incognito Window, and then access your account and try to preview unpublished posts. Are you able to see them within an Incognito Session where you are not able to when viewing in a standard browser window?

    Thanks for the additional info!

  • Unknown's avatar

No, the post never shows up. The “oops” page remains.

When I use an incognito window in Chrome, I get the same result. I have unscheduled the post, and sent it back to draft mode. And I’m still getting the “oops” error.

    Best,

    Jilanne

    Hello? Any more suggestions?

    Thanks, Jilanne

  • Hi @jilannehoffmann,

    • What happens when you click on the preview links here? The preview URL you’re seeing seems different from the ones made there, so can you share how you’re getting to Preview?
    • Also, it would be best to create a separate thread for this since it’s no longer about comments. When I jumped in to help today, I read the whole thing for context and only then realized this wasn’t about comments anymore. Would you be willing to create a new thread here, then update us here? We’ll split off the replies related to the new issue, then merge them into the new thread. Thanks in advance.

When I click on the link you gave me, it sends me to my complete list of posts. If I select the preview link without going in to edit the post, it sends me to the correct post. If, however, I go in to edit the post and then click on the icon that allows for previewing the post, I get the “oops” page. I am copying and pasting this info to the new thread I’ve created specifically for the preview issue.

    Thank you!

    Jilanne

  • Thanks for creating a new thread! I’ve merged details from the other thread into this one.

I’m clicking the “device” preview icon and choosing to preview in a new tab. I see the little Generating Preview animation, then it appears. Are you clicking the same thing?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, that is what I’m clicking and then getting the “oops” page. The other person who was helping me said that they initially got the “oops” but if they waited the preview page would come up. That doesn’t happen for me. It stays on the “oops” page.

  • Do your preview links include “nonce” every time? And if you remove that from the URL so that it looks more like this, what happens?
    https://jilannehoffmann.com/?p=9307&preview=true&_thumbnail_id=9314

  • Unknown's avatar

I have no idea whether the preview link includes “nonce” every time. I just had to Google what that meant. I am not a programmer. I have no idea how to remove a nonce, given that I just click on the preview icon, and when I do, this URL pops up:

    https://jilannehoffmann.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=9307&action=edit

before I click on “preview in a new tab” to actually see the post.

If I click on “preview” while on the page showing all of my posts, both published an unpublished, it immediately shows the preview post at this URL:

    https://jilannehoffmann.wordpress.com/?p=9307&preview=true

  • Catching up here… I am able to confirm if I visit the link you shared initially in this post (https://jilannehoffmann.com/?p=9307&preview_id=9307&preview_nonce=c092e13d4a&preview=true&_thumbnail_id=9314) it results in a 404 message for me.

However, the difficulty that I’ve been having (and I think others in this thread as well) is in replicating this by following your steps. I’ve visited the editor view of the post and clicked on Preview(icon)>Preview in a new tab but when I do that I’m taken to https://jilannehoffmann.com/?p=9307&preview=true&_thumbnail_id=9314.

Essentially, we seem to not be able to get a link with the extra stuff (nonce, etc) in it.

I have no idea whether the preview link includes “nonce” every time. I just had to Google what that meant. I am not a programmer.

I’m not sure what you found within Google, but in WordPress terms a nonce is something like an “encryption key” to help protect URLs and forms from being viewed by anyone who does not have the key. So it’s nothing nefarious, we’re just unclear on how you’re getting that and still looking into why that is the case.

In the meantime I have a few questions and I’m hoping to have your help in narrowing things down a bit. Thanks for your help in checking these out quickly!

    • You mentioned being open to copying this post into a new one. I’m actually curious to have you try that, and schedule the post as you had originally intended. There is a Copy Post option here if you click on the ‘…’ icon to the right of the post you want to copy: https://wordpress.com/posts/drafts/jilannehoffmann.com
    • Do you have this same issue (Preview link in editor sends you to a broken page) in a copied post as well?
    • Does this only affect posts set to scheduled? Or also an issue you have on draft posts too?
    • Is this an issue you have on your other site as well as jilannehoffmann.com?
    • If you clear your cache and cookies (no need to clear your browser history) again, does that have any effect?

    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

I copied the post as you suggested, and the new post has the exact same problem, giving me the same “oops” response when I try to preview it from the icon, but if I preview it from the full list of posts, it shows me a preview.

It is an issue on in draft, too, because I unscheduled it.

Clearing cache and cookies has no effect.

And I went to the trouble of creating a third version from scratch, and it has the same problem. So yes, it affects scheduled and draft posts that have never been scheduled.

I also created a small test post with very little in it. Once again, if I am in edit mode inside the post, and click on the preview icon, I get the oops screen. If I click on preview while viewing the screen containing a list of draft posts, it previews just fine.

If you’re referring to the Dogpatch Writers Collective, I haven’t tried posting from there because it’s inactive at the moment.

  • Thanks @jilannehoffmann. Yeah, I didn’t expect you to know what a nonce is, only to see if removing it fixed the problem. It sounds like it does, and therefore the nonce thing (which we aren’t getting when we test) is the root of the issue.

Now to figure out why you’re getting in the first place, and why we are not, even when we test the same things on your site. Thank you for confirming it’s happening on both sites, regardless of browser as well as their cache or cookies.

    • May I ask which browsers you’ve tried and whether they are current?
    • When you open a post to edit, can you share what kinds of things you’re adding before trying to preview?

Just hoping we can duplicate the error, for starts.

  • Oh, and may I ask, too: if at all possible, could you test to see whether you’re running into the same thing from a different computer? I almost wonder if there’s a security feature acting up.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not sure what you mean. I still don’t know how to identify what a nonce is in order to remove it. I haven’t done anything to remove a nonce, and don’t know how. I just know that when I preview from the list of posts, preview works. When I try to preview while in edit mode for the post, it doesn’t work. And if I schedule the post, it gives me a “preview post” notice, that if I click on it goes to the “oops” page too.

Browsers I’ve used are Safari and Chrome.

    Everything is current.

I don’t have another computer. I only have my laptop. Nothing has changed on this laptop. Preview just suddenly stopped working.

It doesn’t matter whether I’ve added anything or not. I can go back into a post that’s been saved, and try to preview it using the icon, and it doesn’t work. If I add text, remove text, add an image, remove an image, it doesn’t matter.

It doesn’t makes sense that a security feature would suddenly pop up causing a problem, does it?

  • Oh okay. I’m bolding the nonce part in your URL:

    https://jilannehoffmann.com/?p=9307&preview_id=9307&preview_nonce=c092e13d4a&preview=true&_thumbnail_id=9314

I am also not sure why this would suddenly come up, but the information you’ve shared does help provide some clues for where to look. Thanks for sharing what you know.

One more question for now: when you preview a post you have updated, can you click in the address bar and delete &preview_nonce= and everything after that? And then, confirm whether your changes appear in the preview?

I would test this myself but I can’t see the same error here. Thanks in advance for your help and patience in figuring this out.

Hi, I’m not sure where you got that URL. I didn’t give it to you. The URLs I shared with you do not contain the word “nonce” in them. I’ve explained that when I click on the preview icon, it then give me a dropdown menu to click on preview in a new tab. I click on that and it gives me the “oops” page. I have never seen a URL that contains what you have bolded.

And if I’m in the list of posts, If I click on preview, it goes straight to preview just fine. There’s no option to delete anything from a URL before it changes to a preview.
