Preview page not found

  • Unknown's avatar

I get the following message when I try to preview a saved draft post in a new tab:

Oops! That page can’t be found.
It looks like nothing was found at this location. Maybe try one of the links below or a search?

If I refresh the tab, the draft is displayed. Is this normal? I have tried waiting for various lengths of time after saving the draft before preview from five seconds upto a minute.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Tony,

Can you tell us exactly what steps you follow to preview? Do you click on the Preview button, then select Visit Site in the preview overlay in the editor? Do you Ctrl-Click directly on the Preview button? Right-click >Open in new tab?

Can you also check if it makes any difference if you use a different browser/incognito mode?

Hello. Thanks for the reply. The process I use is:
1 Write some text/add an image
    2 Click on Save Draft
3 Click on Preview > Preview in new tab

The issue occurs both in the Google Chrome browser and the Opera browser, in standard and incognito.

I have tested in the Edge browser, and the issue does not occur, but I do not use Edge as is too slow

  • Thanks for the extra details.

I suspect it’s cookie-related: Chrome is in the process of doing away with tracking cookies, and Opera has always blocked them by default, and because your site is on a custom domain this means the browser is effectively blocking us from detecting that you’re already logged in when you view your site directly, as opposed to the dashboard which uses the free WordPress.com address.

To confirm this, can you please check if you see the black admin bar at the top of your site when you preview? If not, that confirms this is the issue.

Hi. The admin bar is displayed on both browsers. I have also tested the Vivaldi browser and the issue does not occur there. I have disabled the Ad-blocker, but that has no effect.

  • Do you have any other browser extensions running? Or any spyware/anti-virus software?

Hi. Thanks for your reply. No other extensions apart from Google translate on the Chrome browser. Tested with Firefox browser which has the same problem. I even tried posting using the Microsoft Word blog template and had the same problem when previewing.

  • Out of curiosity, what if you open an “incognito window” in Chrome, and then log into your WordPress.com site that way? Do you have the same issue when using this method? Incognito mode will skip your cache and cookies and start from a clean slate, so if it works via incognito I recommend clearing your cache/cookies in Chrome to see if it fixes the issue overall.

    Thanks for the additional info!

Thanks for your suggestion. However, the issue still occurs using an incognito window, as I have mentioned before. Also, that does not explain why this happens in all the browsers I have tried, with the exception of the Edge browser.

  • To confirm, you have cleared your cache and cookies in Chrome? I see others had mentioned it here but I did not see you confirm. If not can you please try this and see if it resolves the issue?

    Hi. Yes cookies all cleared

Interestingly, I tried using IE11 on a different machine and there was no issue. However, if I used Chrome on the other different machine, the issue exists.

    Hi there,

Just to double-check, is Chrome up to date on all the machines you’ve tried on?

I understand that we’re going back and forth about the browser a lot, but the issue you described happens almost always due to some local issues with the browser. We weren’t able to replicate the issue with Chrome on our end, and the fact that it works with IE11/Edge on your end further confirms that the issue is somehow specific to the Chrome browser.

Thanks for the reply. All fully up to date. But this doesn’t explain why three other browsers are showing the same issue.

  • I have just sent you an email so we can have a closer look. Let’s keep in touch there. Thanks!
