Preview won’t work
-
I have been updating my page and the preview just won’t work – it shows a super outdated version of my site no matter how many times I have updated the page. I have tried logging off and on again, and even logging on on different devices. I have even tried publishing – it just publishes the super old version. I’ve literally only just started, and am not using any plugins (currently on the free account) – don’t really want to pay to update if I can’t fix this.

Hi there,
Just to confirm, you’re speaking of http://muzzaconsciousness.wordpress.com/, correct? I’m asking as that site is only three days old.
There are several “Preview” options on WordPress.com. There’s a preview option for individual posts or pages in the editor. There’s a preview for theme customizations in the Customizer at Appearance ->Customize. And there’s a preview for the site design in the site editor at Appearance ->Editor.
Can you tell me which of these you’re speaking of (if the post/page editor, what’s the title of the specific post/page? And can you give us some details on what changes you’re trying to make?

That’s the site! It the first preview option I think – the button next to publish when you’re editing a page. At the moment I have 4 draft pages, and whenever I try to preview they all show a very basic version of the homepage, with no links, and half the pics and text missing. The changes I am trying to make it just build the site – I’ve added new blocks, new text, new pages, new pictures, but all I ever get when I published or preview is what I did in the first 5 minutes.

Okay, I think I see what happened here:
There are two editors on WordPress.com – a post/page editor, and a site editor.
In the post/page editor, you control the content that appears on individual posts and pages.
In the site editor, you control the template (design) for your posts and pages, i.e. whether a header/footer/menu/sidebar is visible, how the page is laid out, etc.
It appears that in this case you’ve added your home page’s content, to the default page template. So now every page set to the default template, shows that content.
To fix this, go to Appearance ->Editor. It should show your front page content, but make sure that at the top in the middle it says “Page”. Here you’ll need to do two steps:
1) Restore the template’s default options, that is, the blank placeholder blocks that will display whatever content you add to the pages themselves, and
2) Remove your front page content.
I’ve made a short screen capture to show you what to do:
Once that’s done, click Save and return to the dashboard.
Now if you go to any of your pages in the page editor under Pages ->All Pages, the preview should show the header and footer of the template, but the content of the specific page.
This site editor is a new feature that came out with WordPress 5.9 which was released this week, and we’re all still getting used to it, so please let me know if you run into any trouble with the steps I gave here.
By the way, your site hasn’t been launched yet, so at this point only you can see it. So I’d recommend you publish your pages, rather than leaving them as drafts, so you can view how they look on your actual site.
Other people won’t be able to see your site until you launch it, so there’s no need to take extra steps to hide your content from view at this point :)
