Previewing a theme?
-
Used to be I could preview what a different theme would look like on my blog. Seems like that feature no longer exists. Or am I missing it?
If it’s been deprecated, let me call for its return. I want to see what my blog looks like with a theme before I commit to it.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The theme customizer still exists. Dashboard > Appearance > Themes > Customize
http://blog.jimgrey.net/wp-admin/customize.php?return=%2Fwp-admin%2F
If you have not purchased the custom design upgrade note that no changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side) will be visible to visitors.
See:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-fonts/You do not need to load the design tools unless you have the Custom Design upgrade. All of these functions can be accessed from your dashboard – without loading the custom design tools – no upgrade required.
Appearance > Header
Appearance > Background
Appearance > Theme Options (applicable only to some themes)
Settings > Reading (set a static front page)
Site Title and Tagline > Settings > GeneralIf you are using the preview mode for the Custom Design upgrade some of the settings in that mode will save but they won’t show up on the front end unless you purchase the upgrade.
To go back to the free options, go to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Colors and click the “exit the preview” link in yellow at the top of the panel on the right.

If you have purchased the required upgrade then you can use this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform so you can copy and paste your text into a thread that will appear in the CSS Forum where you will get the help you need.

Sorry, I can see that I wasn’t clear. This isn’t about customizing my exisiting theme. When I want to see what a different theme looks like on my blog, I could go to the Themes page, scroll to the theme I wanted to try, and click a Preview button. My blog would appear with the theme applied, in like a demo mode.

The theme customizer which allows us to preview themes still exists. Dashboard > Appearance > Themes > Customize

If you want to browse themes then go to http://theme.wordpress.com and use the “Find a theme button” to open the feature filters.
-
My choices on the Customizer are: Site Title and Tagline, Colors and Backgrounds, Fonts, Header Image, CSS, Widgets, and Static Front Page. I’m not seeing one where I can choose a theme to see how it looks — am I missing it?

Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Every theme has a detailed theme description page with set up instructions and a live demo site. I would consult those before I made the switch.

https://twentyfifteendemo.wordpress.com/And, the theme customizer allows us to preview a new theme. https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and browse themes until you find one you like, then click “activate” or “preview“, or type in the name of the theme you want to use and when it appears click “activate” or “preview“.
After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.

Ok, so I think I’ve figured it out.
On this page: https://wordpress.com/themes — I can’t preview a theme on my blog.
On this page: https://jimgrey.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php — I can.
