previewing/picking a theme
-
In the dashboard in WordPress, I found how to look at the themes available; however, it only lets me see the top portions of the first page. When I choose one and click on it, it takes me to a screen where I get another thumbnail of the theme in a panel on the left, and the rest of the screen is filled up with text and maybe a picture that look nothing like the first page of the theme. How do I view all pages of a theme so that I can figure out which one to use? Then how do I get instructions on how to construct within a theme? Also, do all plugins work with all themes?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
When you’re searching for themes, hover over one and click “Info.” You then have a few options. “Open Live Demo” will open an example of the theme and you can click through it, seeing all the pages available. “Overview” will explain all the options available with the theme and how to set it up. Scroll through to see all the info.
Here is an overview on how to work with themes: https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/
Additionally, here are some helpful videos on how to Customize Your Site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/video-tutorials/customize-your-site/
And how to Get Started: https://en.support.wordpress.com/start/
WordPress.com includes most popular plugin functionality within sites automatically. Additional Plugins are only available with the Business Plan. You can read about built-in Plugins and additional ones here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
You can also read more about the business plan here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/business-plan/
Hope this helps :)

Hi Katkiinson –
Thank you for responding. However, that does not work – when I hover over a theme, there is nothing that says “Info”. A button appears that says “Details & Preview”, it just takes me to a screen where I get another thumbnail of the theme in a panel on the left, and the rest of the screen is filled up with text and maybe a picture that are unrelated to the first page of the theme: https://login.filesanywhere.com/fs/v.aspx?v=8c69628e5e5e74a79ea0
I went to the first link you sent me, the overview on working with themes; but it does not match what actually happens. It says, “To preview a theme before activating it, go to My Sites → Themes. Click on the three dots to the right of the theme’s name, and then click on Try & Customize.” How do you go to My Sites – Themes? I find themes on the dashboard, but there are no three dots, or anything that says Try & Customize:

Hi einteractiveorg,
I tried to view your screenshots but I’m seeing error messages which say the download link has expired or the download limit has been reached. It would be great if you could upload them to your Media Library instead:
https://wordpress.com/media/einteractiveorg.wordpress.com
I noticed there are several sites listed in your account — is einteractiveorg.wordpress.com the one you are having trouble with?
Thanks!

Hi Gemmacevans –
I appreciate you trying to address my question. No, it’s not the https://wordpress.com/media/einteractiveorg.wordpress.com site. I have a WordPress site on Go Daddy, and just found out from them last night that my account with them is WordPress.org, not WordPress.com, and that they are different. Are you able to provide assistance with WordPress.org?
Thanks!
Erin -
Hi Erin, the best place to ask would be at https://wordpress.org/support/ as they are all much more familiar with their site and things over there. There are differences between the WordPress.org Themes pages and the ones here at WordPress.com and the demo previews are a little thin.
What you might consider would be to install the WordPress.org software on your computer so that you can then download and try out the themes. You can also export your content from your live site and import it into your local installation so that you are working with and viewing your own stuff.

Hi thesacredpath –
Thank you for that information. However, I went to the link you gave to install WordPress and it is extremely complicated; I couldn’t even make sense of the first section. I don’t know what “your web server (via FTP or shell)” means, don’t know what “ability to create MySQL databases” means, don’t know what a text editor is, and don’t know what an FTP client is.
Before you begin the install, there are a few things you need to have and do.
These are:
Access to your web server (via FTP or shell)
Ability to create MySQL databases
A text editor
An FTP Client
Your web browser of choice -
Help with the WordPress installation will come from https://wordpress.org/support/
We aren’t able to support the installation here in the WordPress.com forum. With that said, there are also some great “getting started” articles here that will help.
