Previous and next page buttons

    Hi all,

I am trying to create a blog with pages which are linked to each other. However, this gives me some problems:
If I create pages, I can make all pages automatically appear in the menus, but I’ll have to create the next and previous buttons for each page individually.
If I create blog posts, the next and previous buttons automatically appear, but then I’ll have to create the menu links manually.

Is there a way I can combine both, so that my pages are linked automatically with previous and next buttons, and they still show up in the menus without having to add them manually?

I’m sorry but we cannot give an accurate answer until you post the URL for the blog in question starting with http:// Please post it now so we can get started helping you.

this is just a regular wordpress.com blog, it shouldn’t matter what my exact url is because this should be the same for any blog…
but here it is: http://thephpcenter.wordpress.com/ (only contains some dummy text atm)

I’m not aware of which theme you are using. Although the wording varies almost all wp.com themes feature previous/next navigation tabs on the main posts pages as well as on category/archive pages.

Are you using an cuatom menu and creating a page based structure as is common in websites? http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

If what you are referring to is static pages with links to child pages then this post may be helpful http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/24/parent-page-links-to-child/

If what you are referring to is splitting content by use of pagination (next page) then that has to be done manually as do page jump links.

What I am referring to is that static pages can automatically show up in your menus (I know btw how to create custom menus). The point is, that as far as I know, you can’t link static pages at the same level automatically to each other.
e.g. if this is the page structure:
    page1
    page2
    -subpage21
    -suppage22
    page3

then I want automatic links from page1 tot page2, from page2 tot page1 and page3, from page3 to page2, and from subpage21 to subpage22 and back. However, as far as I could found out this was not possible to do automatically (I know how to do this manually).

So then I thought, I could also use blogposts instead of static pages, because they do link automatically. However, I could find a way to have menus automatically linked to the posts. Of course I can add all links manually, but I don’t want to do that.

So is there a way I can have all my pages or blogs automatically in the menu, AND having previous and next link buttons to other pages/blogs automatically?

ps. I do know about nextpage and page-jumps, but they still don’t create the desired effect

BTW I don’t mind if I have to change my theme in order to do this

After some more searching I’m quite sure that it isn’t possible for posts to show up in menus (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/dynamic-posts-in-menu).

So is it possible to autolink pages to each other, as I described above?

If you’re talking about a wp.com blog, then please don’t consult the wp.org forum for answers to your questions: wp.org blogs have different software, different possibilities and limitations, different problems and solutions. (That’s why there are two separate forums, and that’s one of the reasons we always need a link to your blog when you ask a question.)

As far as wp.com blogs are concerned, the answer you found is incorrect: a custom menu can include links to static pages, category/tag pages, individual posts, and even external webpages.

Automatic next/previous tabs on static pages aren’t possible, because the whole point of static pages is that they’re not in sequence like posts are.

The closest you can get is automatic links on a parent page to its own child pages. This happens in a few themes only.

And in general (as you can see here, for instance), themes don’t all work the same way
(which is another one of the reasons why we always need a link to the blog in question).

Ok thanks for the answer. But in the custom menu settings, I can’t find any option which allows me to include individual posts. Of course I can use the urls of the posts, but then I’d have to update the menu manually everytime I post a new item, and that’s exactly what I don’t want. Did I overlook something?

I just found it!! I didn’t notice that some options were hidden:P
    Tx all!
