Previous/Next feature

I just asked this question but I’ll ask again and hope it’s worded a little better. I ‘trashed’ a few days entries so that they could be combined into one day/post. (August 12, 13,and 14, which were all individual days/posts became August 12-14, one post.) Previously, if you were reading the individual days/posts and read through August 9-11, at the bottom of that page you had the option to click on ‘previous’ (in this case Aug 3-8) or click on, ‘next,’ in this case Aug 12. Now that August 12 has been trashed (and combined into August 12-14) instead of saying, ‘Aug 12-14,’ (which is the next post, the one that the other were combined to form) under the ‘next’ button, it just says, ‘next post.’ If you click on , ‘next post,’ it says that post cannot be found. And it doesn’t give you the option of clicking on the Aug 12-14 post, which is there and visible if you start at the top of the blog and scroll down. You just cannot access any days beyond the last day before those certain days were trashed.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

I just went through the entire set of August posts, from August 19th-26th to August 3-8, in each case scrolling down to the bottom to use the corresponding “Previous” link. Then I went in reverse using the “Next” links, again without hitch. It seems to be working precisely as you’d expect it to. Are you still encountering the “post not found” errors, or is it working correctly for you now?

It’s still not working exactly right. I’m still trying to figure out exactly what it’s doing so I can explain it correctly so hang on. And thanks for helping! It seems to be working in one direction but not the other. But earlier when I posted the question, it wasn’t working at all.

OK. So it works on my phone in either direction until I go past and then try to come back. I think it gets messed up between the 12th-14th and the 9-11. So if I click on the 19th-26th and read through and then click previous (aug 15th-18th) it works and goes to aug. 15th-18th. If I read through 15th-18th and click on previous (aug 12th-14th) it works and goes to Aug 12th-14th. If I read through aug12th-14th and get to the bottom, I can get to the previous day (9-11) but I cannot go back to the 15th-18th. That’s where under, “next,” it says, “NEXT POST.” If you click on NEXT POST, that’s when it says, “oops.”

Thanks for that additional info. It’s working perfectly on my desktop PC. I’ll call for staff attention to the topic. You may subscribe to the topic in the sidebar here.

ok thanks. just figured out (on my home computer) that if I click on the last entry (aug 19-26) and read through and start using the previous button to navigate, I can make it all the way to the beginning. But, once I get to aug 12-14, I cannot go back to the top using previous. I also figured out that no matter where I start, as long as its before Aug 12-14, if I am trying to read from an earlier entry (say, July 25) to the latest entry (aug, 19-26), I cannot advance beyond Aug 12-14 using the “next” button. thanks a lot for your help.

  • Hi there,

Have you tried clearing your browser cache yet?

Every time you view a website your browser stores information about that page, including where links on the page go so it doesn’t have to look that info up the next time you load the page. It’s possible that your browser is trying to connect you to the old location of that link instead of looking up the new location. Clearing the cache should force that to refresh.

If that doesn’t help, can you please give me the direct link to the post on which the next/previous links aren’t working?

  • Unknown's avatar

First off, thanks for chiming in. Well, I’m sure it’s easy but I’m not sure I know how to clear the browser cache. Google, “pacificcresttrailweb.” I think it’s between August 9-11 and August 12-14 that I’m having the problem.

  • Did you try to Google “clearing your browser cache”? You can also find instructions here:

    Browser Issues

I asked for a link to your post, as that would make it easier for me to check on this. Telling me to google your site makes it harder for me to help you, especially given the types of titles you use. More on that below. The link to the post is what appears in your browser while you are looking at the post:

    https://pacificcresttrailweb.wordpress.com/2016/12/05/august-9-11/

There is nothing wrong with the next/previous links on that post or any of the posts adjacent to it, so I repeat that the problem is most likely with your browser.

Just something else – using dates for your post titles is a very poor practice if you have any hope of being discovered by search engines. The title you set on a post should contain key words that describe the content, so that Google can return that post as a result when someone searches for the key word. No one is likely to search for “August 9-11”, so you have very little chance of ever being properly indexed by search engines and getting any traffic from search results if you use those types of titles on your posts.

OK. Thanks for helping out. I think that everything is working like it should now. I think it just took a day or two to settle out or something. I sure didn’t do anything else editing-wise and it seems to be working fine. Maybe I just had to have my computer off a few times or the post had to cycle through or something. I’m not sure what fixed it, but it wasn’t me. Thanks again. About the post titles. Do you have any suggestions for a title that might work and get some traffic. I think that the “pacificcresttrailweb” was something that automatically was given to me. I guess if I just title my first post something that might be searched for, like, “Pacific Crest Trail,” instead of, “Washington June 29/30,” that might help? Have a good one.

  • I guess if I just title my first post something that might be searched for, like, “Pacific Crest Trail

That is exactly the type of title you need to use. Think of the terms people searching for information or stories on the trail is likely to use. Think of what your post is about. A specific section of the trial perhaps? Are your pictures of a named peak, river, or other geographical feature? Or did something memorable happen when hiking that section, that the pictures are almost telling a story? How would you title that story?

Make sure each post’s title is unique, and refers to something in the post. That way, if people start searching for those words, there’s a chance they might discover your posts, and you’ll gain readers.
