I’m trying to create a .org blog, and initially WordPress says it will be free for the first year, and $18/year afterwards, but when I select it, the cheapest option is suddenly $48/year. Why is there a difference?
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Hi there!
What is free for the first year is a domain registration, but in order to get that free first-year registration, you need to sign up for a yearly plan. The domain would normally be $18 if you purchased it separately.
The Personal plan, which is the lowest level plan that gives the free first-year domain registration, is $48 per year.
I hope that clarifies things!

I am literally more confused than I was before.
Why does it offer $18 with the first year free, if it just takes me to a page where that isn’t even an option? -
Hey there, to clarify, a custom domain is free the first year and $18/year thereafter with a paid annual plan.
Generally speaking you’ll need a domain and hosting to get a site up and going. So the cheapest paid hosting plan (required for a custom domain) is $48. The domain is $18, but we give it to you free the first year.
I hope that helps!
If you’re looking for an entirely free site, that’s fine too. Just choose one with a .home.blog or .wordpress.com address, and choose the free options in signup.
