After watching some tutorials on WordPress it was my understanding that WordPress websites can be created, edited, and managed free of charge but in the process of setting it up I was prompted by an email to buy the starting plan to get started with creaating my website. Is this true? Can I really not create a WordPress website free of charge?

  • Hi there,

WordPress is the name of the free, open source software made by the community on WordPress.org. To use that software you need a domain and a hosting plan at a provider like Bluehost or Pressable.

The forum you’re posting to now is for WordPress.com, a managed host for WordPress. We offer free WordPress hosting at a free example.wordpress.com address we provide when you sign up with us. That free hosting never expires, but some features of the open source software are limited.

But we also sell paid plans with additional features on WordPress.com. One of those additional features is the ability to connect your own domain to your site. You can either connect a domain you already own somewhere else, or you can register a domain directly with us. All our paid plans include one domain for free for the first year.

So really to start with my own domain I need to purchase one of the plans. Damn, that was not included din the tutorial I was watching….

Follow up question; under $5 plan I see that wordpress plugins are not included. Does that mean I will not be able to use any plugin or that I just wont be able to use the paid plugins?

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for reaching back out.

Damn, that was not included din the tutorial I was watching….

    What are you watching exactly?

Does that mean I will not be able to use any plugin or that I just wont be able to use the paid plugins?

This means you would not be able to use any plugins.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks for your reply!

This is the video I’m referring to:

    Follow-up question:

If I go with WordPress.org can I connect a domain I already own for free or would that include an additional charge as well?

  • Howdy,

WordPress.org is not a webhost. It is merely the home of the open-source WordPress software project. You can find support documents, a plugin directory, and support forums. But you cannot host a site there.

To use the software from WordPress.org, you would need to purchase hosting space (from Bluehost, Pressable, or any other host) and register a domain name. Then you would be able to have a WordPress site connected to your specific domain name.

There is nowhere, at least that I know of, that will give you free hosting space and let you use a custom domain for free.

Thanks! Greatly appreciate your time and effort to answer my questions fam!

I’ve tried installing my first plugin and adding a template with Starter Templates but after selecting and loading up a template my site breaks down and returns a 404

“This page doesn’t seem to exist.
It looks like the link pointing here was faulty. Maybe try searching?”

I’ve tried resetting permalinks, deleting plugins, reinstalling Starter Templates, resetting htaccess file to defaults but nothing seems to help and the site is still broken. Is there anything else I can try?

Forgot to mention but before setting up WP I’ve changed DNS records on godaddy to point to hostgator; not sure if that might’ve messed something up in the process but just to let you know.

Would love to resolve this and get started with creating my first website because I’m really eager to start creating and have already exhausted all solutions I could find.

    Thanks in advance guys!

  • Hey there,

What is your site URL? If you’re pointing your records from Go Daddy to Hostgator, I would definitely reach out to either if them to make sure that the records were added properly. Since your site isn’t hosted with us, we’re unable to verify what the issue is, but Go Daddy should be able to:

    Hope this helps!
