Hi,
Depending on your domain extension, once you transfer it over to WordPress.com, it’ll be renewed for an additional year, and you’ll be billed for that according to the price listed in this document:
https://wordpress.com/en/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/
However, if you purchase one of our plans, you can transfer the domain for free.

Greetings!
I want to upgrade from free to Personal. The pricing page is showing me $4/mo ($48 annual charge) with free domain registration for a year (or $18). That’s awesome. After a year, the annual payment then is $66/year (or $5.50/month).
So my questions are:
- Should I assume that the ongoing cost of just a site is $48?
- Might that price change independent of the domain registration?
- Is there a way of cancelling the upgrade (reverting back to free, with ads)?
- What if I don’t need a special domain (that doesn’t have “wordpress” in it), but I want to get rid of ads? Is there an upgrade for that?

Hi there,
After a year, the annual payment then is $66/year (or $5.50/month).
I should clarify up front that a free domain is included only if you subscribe to the yearly plan option. So you would pay the annual renewal fee, but there is not an option to break that up into monthly renewal installments.
Should I assume that the ongoing cost of just a site is $48?
If you do not register a custom domain, but only upgrade to the Personal Plan, the renewal cost is the same, yes. Domain renewal is billed separately based n the pricing you see here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/
Might that price change independent of the domain registration?
We do adjust pricing sometimes but typically that only affects new signups, and legacy upgrade continue at the same price you paid in your initial purchase.
Is there a way of cancelling the upgrade (reverting back to free, with ads)?
Yes at any time you can cancel an upgrade and go back to a free site.
What if I don’t need a special domain (that doesn’t have “wordpress” in it), but I want to get rid of ads? Is there an upgrade for that?
Yes. If you are happy with the features of your free site but just want to turn off ads you can purchase that as an “add on” here: https://wordpress.com/add-ons/freesite8728078.wordpress.com
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Very helpful! Just one last question of clarification about this:
If you do not register a custom domain, but only upgrade to the Personal Plan, the renewal cost is the same, yes. Domain renewal is billed separately based n the pricing you see here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/
The Personal bundle appears to require domain registration.
- How do I get the bundle without that?
- Isn’t talkingonthethink.wordpress.com already a domain (or subdomain)? Couldn’t just keep that and pay the $48/year without messing with the domain-registration bit?
