My wife said she had a custom domain with you and it only costs $18/yr. I tried to sign up and use my existing domain (www.gunfaqs.org), and I’m being asked to sign up at $99/yr for premium. I only want a free sight with my domain. How can I do that?

You can no longer get a custom domain or domain mapping with a free plan at WordPress.com. The only way for new users to map a domain they own now is by upgrading to a paid plan. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
You don’t have to use the Premium plan though. The Personal plan at $35.88 would work too. You’d need to buy the upgraded plan first. That would put a domain credit into your account that you could then use to map a domain you already own. https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
