Print problem with I.E.

  • Unknown's avatar

We seem to have a problem with M/S I.E. when printing posts. Simply said, they won’t print. The action just dies. The function will work with Chrome & Firefox. Some material I found on the internet would seem to imply that there is a CSS incompatibility between some WP themes and IE. I found other WP blogs with the same problem and others that print as expected. Do you have any advice?

    Hi!

Can you let me know what version of IE you’re using? You can find this by visiting the following site in IE:

    https://www.whatismybrowser.com/

Thanks for your reply. My I.E. is Version 11 and “whatismybrowser.com” says it’s up to date.

Thanks for clarifying! Just to confirm, the print box is popping up, but the actual print action isn’t going through correctly. You’ve selected the correct printer (that’s working correctly in other browsers) but nothing is coming out. Is that correct?

Your description is correct. You can try it yourself, (if you use Windows I.E.). Go to http://www.tritownapple.org.

BTW, I have checked out sites just using the print preview option. If the hang-up exists, there will be a blank print preview. If it works, the print preview will display as usual.

    Thanks again for your help.

Appreciate the details Bill! I’d like to do a quick test to help diagnose the problem. Could you try printing from the following sites?

    https://callitluck.wordpress.com/

    https://momentsincolor.wordpress.com/

They’re both test sites I’ve set up for this purpose. You should see a Print icon under posts on each blog. Just try printing a post from each. Please let me know if you have trouble with one or both from IE!

Hi Jeremey (did I get that right?)
Sorry I haven’t replied sooner. I was out all afternoon and just was able to check my mail a while ago.

Unfortunately both tests failed. And before you might ask, I closed the window between tests so that I could have a “fresh” copy of the browser for each test. I tried using the print preview option on the browser as well as the print button on the blog (separate tests). That failed as well.

Before you think I may be doing something else wrong, :), let me give you a link to a site (WordPress.com) that does work. Now in this case, the author (my son) doesn’t use a print button on his blog, but I used the print feature of I.E. and it worked, as advertised: http://georgetownmetropolitan.com/.

I’m convinced it has nothing to do with the blog print button and everything to do with the theme CSS and I.E., but I’m not skilled enough to really get to heart of the problem. Regards, Bill

    Hey Bill,

Thanks for passing along the results of our test! That helps to narrow things down a bit. Have you found any site at WordPress.com that allows you to print using the social button beneath the post or is the only successful method in IE to use the IE Print feature?

    Hi Jeremy,
I didn’t have a blog that I knew for sure had installed the print button, so I checked out a couple of old blogs that I still have but don’t use. One would not process the “print preview” option, but the other did and printed using the I.E. command. Since it’s my blog it was easy to add the social button and give it a try. As anticipated, it worked. Here’s the blog:

    Hey Bill,

That is very helpful indeed! My current thoughts are that this could be a theme-related issue. Could I get you to switch away from Misty Lake if even for a second to something like Twenty Twelve and giving this one more shot?

I really appreciate you hanging in there with me as I ask you to jump through hoops!

    Hi Jeremy,
I just tried the 2012 theme on our site and, using I.E., was able to print our latest post using the social print button. I also tried the browser “print preview” & “print” buttons and they worked as well. So it looks like it is definitely a theme based problem. We have little activity over the weekend, so if there is a good reason to keep the blog on 2012 for a while longer I can do that. otherwise I’ll convert it back.

I’m happy to to work along with you. I appreciate you staying with the problem. Maybe I’m more appreciative than some. I have a son who works in customer support for IBM, so I have some empathy for your efforts. Regards, Bill

    Hi Bill,

Thanks so much for running that test! I’m glad the Twenty Twelve theme worked. That helps to narrow the issue down. It looks like the specific issue here is the method Misty Lake uses to get print styles. It uses a method that isn’t compatible with IE.

We’re definitely looking into the issue, but I’ll be honest, we have some other higher-priority items we’re focused on at the moment. The best solutions for right now would either be to A) switch themes or B) use another browser to print.

    Hi Jeremey,
Thanks for your efforts on this issue. Naturally I’d like to see a quick fix to “Misty Lake” (and the other themes that have the same problem). But now that I know that my original hunch was correct, the problem is between the theme and I.E., I can decide on a course of action. I can’t control the browser our visitors use, so we need to decide if changing the theme is the best option, or wait until the theme is fixed. My client will need to make that decision, since they pay for the work. I suspect they will give the go ahead. Who knows, we may end up with a more attractive site, :). Take care, and if you would, keep my email address and let me know when the problem is corrected. We may want to return to “Misty Lake”.
    Thanks much,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

I’ll definitely let you know if this is fixed up! If you are thinking about switching themes and want to know whether a certain theme has a print style that will be compatible with IE, I’m happy to check for you!
