Privacy

When I opened my account I deliberately set the privacy settings to keep the site closed and private until I was ready for it to be seen. Today I got the following email…

    Howdy,

We recently discovered that an error in our system caused your site, to be hidden from search engines by default. We’ve updated it for you so that search engines can now find it and include it in search results. But if you prefer to stay hidden from search engines, you can update your site’s visibility in your Settings.
Not sure if you’d like search engines to find your site? Read more about these Visibility settings.

Really? I think new accounts should be closed to public view and search engine scraping (and remain that way) until and unless the owner opens them up deliberately… not the other way around.

    Thoughts?

most people want their blog public easy for friends to see and a common complaint is “my blog will not search” – most people would not change until months into owning their blog – so I think open is best

people that want private friends only will change it or show up in the forum wanting to know how to change it when they start

there was a programming problem that seems to have marked some sites to “discourage search engines” in error – there have been a steady stream of upset folks about the discourage setting since it will take a couple of months for that to be updated by search engines

Yea… I get that… but uses make that choice for them selves with a simple prompt and instructions to remind them that opening things up is their call and responsibility (not the other way around). It’s so easy to do and would be (in my opinion) more respectful and responsible … especially in todays world where some companies get way too aggressively focused on their own SEO scores, click-thru rates etc. at the expense of individual choice, privacy and preference.

Just my opinion for what its worth.
