Privacy- add users

Ok so like everyone else who posts on here I am new to this. I have set up a private blog for when we are travelling and wnat to invite friends and family to follow our trip. I sent an invite to a friend and I was with them when they accepted the invite and joined wordpress.com (actually I wanted to be able to explain the process to my less computer abled friends and family).

They joined up with a username only and this was done succesfully.

I added their new username to my privacy settings and then they attempted to put my blog address into the ‘manage blog subscriptions’ box- they keep getting a ‘you do not have access to that blog’ message.

I presume their is a checkbox or something that I am missing- so far this process seems very complicate for the not so computer abled
    HELP please. E

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Email subscriptions and RSS feeds do not work on blogs that are set to private. They will have to log into their account and then visit your blog in order to see what is on it.

I’m having trouble adding people to my private site as well. Do “users” added at the “users” and “invites” menus have different status (contributor, author, etc.) than “users” added at the “privacy” menu (just viewers)? Thanks!

No. These are the only official roles we can provide for the users we add to our blogs whether or not the blog visibility is set to public or private.

This is how we add them to our blog.

I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose – You would use this setting to create a private blog. If selected, another area will appear where you can control which WordPress.com users will be able to log into your blog to read it (those users will only be able to read your blog, they will not get access to your dashboard to edit your blog, please see the section on adding users if you want to give people edit access).

If you truly want to keep your blog “private” then those you add as official users must comprehend that they must not backlink to your blog or share any links to your blog or to any posts or pages in your blog with others on the internet. If they do share then the result will be that what they share will be indexed by search engines and availabe to all using the internet. This is why the social networking sharing options (Twitter, Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc.) are disabled on private blogs, except for the print and email ones.
