Privacy and Cookie Banner on every page after accepting cookies
-
Hi there, I’m not sure how I can fix this so I’m hoping you can help me!
We have used WordPress to create our church’s website and currently do not pay for any features except our domain. To my knowledge, there aren’t any plug-ins with our site. It was purchased previously and has been assigned to our shiny new website but every time we change pages within our site, we keep getting asked to ‘agree’ or ‘learn more’ about the cookies and privacy notice.
Is there a way that I can change the cookie expiry duration? Thank you for your help!

Hi there,
Usually when an issue like this occurs, it can be traced to an expired (or broken) cookie stored on your local web browser. It looks like you are using Google Chrome as your browser, so with this in mind I would like you to try the following
- clear your cache and cookies based on the steps google recommends here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050
- Also make sure you are not blocking any “3rd party cookies” as explained in that guide as well.
- If you continue to have loading issues after completing those steps, I would like you to try another browser instead, like Firefox. Are you able to proceed if you use a browser other than Chrome?
Thanks for the additional info!

Hi, thank you for replying!
I’ve done as you suggested — I cleared the cookies and cache in my browser but this didn’t sort the problem, sadly. I also double checked to make sure I wasn’t blocking any 3rd party cookies as the guide suggested.I tried to load the website in Safari also, but still the same problem persists. I don’t have any other browser installed as I use primarily use Chrome with a number of features … I don’t suppose you have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Double check to see if your browser is due for any updates or new versions and install those. I’d also turn off all of your browser extensions and try this through an incognito window to see if the behavior continues.

Hi, thanks again for the response!
I checked both for updates — currently up-to-date. Tried launching the website through an incognito window and the pop-ups continued asking to agree to the settings on every pages. Sadly! Any other tips would be brilliant! Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the update. I’m not able to replicate this in Chrome – I only have to click the button once to remove the banner.
So let’s try something else – can you go here and see what message you receive under the “Checking your browser” section? https://wordpress.com/support/third-party-cookies/#checking-your-browser
If you have third-party cookies properly enabled in your browser, you should see this message:
Great, third party cookies are properly enabled in your browser!
If not, follow the steps under that check to properly enable those cookies in your browser.
Let us know if you still have trouble!

Hey, thank you for your reply. So I’ve done the above with regards to Chrome; I didn’t want to allow all cookies across my laptop, but on the wordpress, as well as our custom domain, URLs, I’ve reset the cookies and allowed both (along with the
[*.]wordpress.comhandle) to the sites that can always use cookies. I refreshed the page and went to check the website and, frustratingly, the banner still shows up.I’ve been doing some digging: whenever we access our custom domain (http://stoswaldschurchbidston.org) and all the pages using this custom domain, the pop-up banner shows up asking us to accept the cookies. There are a few pages on the website (for example under Youth & Children > Youth Fellowship) that include links to different pages (Youth Fellowship > News) that then have the domain change to “https://stoswaldschurch.wordpress.com/news/” and this does not have the pop-up banner.
Do you have any idea why this shows up on our own custom domain but not on the one which includes “stoswaldschurch.wordpress.com” ? And how I can fix this? My husband has reported the same banner problem and I’m fairly confident that it’s evident on all our visitors to the church website … *eugh!*. Any help would be ace — thanks in advance!

Hi there,
stoswaldschurchbidston.org is your domain with GoDaddy, yes? From what I can see they have offered to connect the domain with your WordPress.com site via their “domain masking” feature and this does not actually work with our service. Instead it leads to the issue you describe: You site is showing up at two addresses (and other odd behaviour like incorrect page stats and cookie banners) as a result.
To correctly connect your domain you will need our WordPress.com Personal Plan, which will allow for a properly functioning domain connection (one that will allow your site only to show at a single address) and will also turn off the ads we show on free sites to help cover our operating costs.
Once you have upgraded you can let us know, and from there we will walk you through the process of connecting your domain correctly so that your cookies banner appears on all pages as expected.
Thanks!
