Privacy concern : deleted blog – but name still accessible

    Hi,

I deliberately deleted the — private — blog I’m working on. However, its name can still be accessed publicly, and that’s a concern to me.
    Here is what happened.

I was working on my blog, and at the same time commenting on someone else’s WordPress blog. I did not realise that by virtue of being logged in my own blog, I was also logged in that other blog with my WordPress username. Therefore, the comment registerd there both with my username and with the web address of my blog. This web address has some information in it that I do not want to be public.

Readers of that blog, when clicking on my name, would be brought to a WordPress log-in page. They could not go past that since it required a password, but the address of the blog was displayed — and that’s a privacy concern to me.

That’s the reason why I deleted entirely my blog. However, readers of that other blog, where I commented, can still see the address of my deleted blog when hovering with their mouse over my username, and when they click on it, they are brought to another WordPress page which says, in huge letters, that the (private) blog that was formerly at the address xxx does not exist any more. How’s that for privacy ? I had even made my user profile private !

Please, please, is there a way to delete that address that I do not want pasted all over the Internet ? I’ve tried from inside my account, but the address does not show anywhere anymore. And support is closed until March 1st…

You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.

This support forum is for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. If your question is about a self-hosted WordPress blog then you’ll find help at the WordPress.org forums.

If you don’t understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, you may find this information helpful.

If you forgot to include a link to your blog, you can reply and include it below. It’ll help people to answer your question.

You should be able to change it under your Profile->Website. The problem is, that change is probably not going to be applied to comments you made earlier. For that, you would need staff intervention. You can always email them at support@wordpress.com

Thank you, Raincoaster. Actually, I have deleted the address of my former blog from my profile, and it is still accessible by the public the way I described.

These privacy issues are really a pity, because otherwise I’m discovering WordPress and I like it very much.

I realise most blogs are meant to be as public as possible and not private, but I’d like to suggest to the developing team out there that a blogging platform is, in theory, a great way to set up a small, quick-and-dirty, informal discussing space for a group of colleagues, friends, neighbours, etc, over specific tasks or issues.

However, privacy is paramount in this case.

It would be really nice if a few tweaks were brought to the platform in this department. I’m sure there’s nothing much to change, but when privacy is concerned, it’s those tiny leaks that compromise one’s safety.
