privacy for dummies

Hi. I am new to WordPress. I am also new to blogging. I am having trouble understanding the “Privacy” aspect of my blog. I have read all the information on this topic, and I have read the forum threads. Can anyone give a briefing (in blogging for dummies fashion) on what happens with my blog if I set it to private.

some topics I am having trouble understanding:

    1. if my blog is private, does this mean that everyone I invite to it has to have a username and password with WordPress, i.e. a WordPress account? (I think this is an obvious answer, yes, but i just wanted to make sure)

    2. when i post a blog i have an option to make it “public” or “private”. does this mean although i have set my blog as private that my post could be public domain if i do not select the “private” button? Or does this mean that my post is private within my blog so those i have allowed to see my blog cannot see the “private” post, only i can see the “private” post?

    3. If i have links on my blog to other blogs or websites that I am recommending on my blog will my blog then be on the network of links out in cyber space? if this is the case, does this mean that if people link back from the website i have linked to that they can have access to my blog. (i sure hope this make sense. i’m not sure if i understand what i said myself, lol)

    1. Yes
    2. If your blog is set to private, no posts you make on that blog will show up for the general public. Only the people you invite will be able to see the posts. Your post would be private within the blog so that only you could see it.
    3. Once you set the blog to private, on the settings > privacy page, deselect “I would like my links to be public, without passing through hiderefer.com” and then all your links will go through hidreferer.com which will mask the identity of your site when someone clicks on a link.
