Privacy option?
-
I’m sorry if this is in the wrong section or if it’s been posted before.
I’ve got my blog set to the “I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors” privacy option.
Now I don’t mind anyone reading my blog, but I’m not too happy about searchengines finding my blog.
Looking through the Dashboard I’ve seen that quite a few visitors have come from searchengines.
Is there any way to change that? I really don’t want to use the ‘Friends’ privacy option.
-
Something mayn’t have happened right.Try again to select the option ‘I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors’; then click on ‘update options’ and wait, and sometimes wait a considerable time if you are on dial up, for the updating to be completed before navigating away from the page.
You may need to wait several days for the faster search engines and a couple of weeks for google to be sure that search engines aren’t finding your new posts. Actively search.Old posts or old versions tend to float around in cyberspace for a few months after you thought that you killed them.
-
This has been my option since I created the blog though and as you said I’ve stayed on that screen when changing options to make sure it definitely changes.
But it still allows access from searchenginges?

If you use the forum search box you will find this has been discussed many times before on the forum. Once the search engines have your stuff in them there is nothing you can do but wait. It will take months before it no longer appears. That of course is not under the control of wordpress.
P.S. IMO this post should be moved from the css customization forum to the support forum. -
I did use the search option, but couldn’t find any topics, as most topics were in relation to setting the option at a later date, but mine was set to that option since day one.
Surely that means that it shouldn’t have appeared in searchengines at all?
Also very recent posts from this week show up in searchengines.
I do apologise for posting it in the wrong forum, but couldn’t see an option to move it.
-
Only moderators and staff can move posts so mentioning it was simply my way of drawing the attention of those who could move it to the need to do so.
Search engines are weird. Ordinarily it takes months for posts to be picked up but sometimes for no explicable reason they can be picked up right away. Some keywords will be picked up more quickly than others.
The bottom line is that you can’t do anything about it. Also you can’t stop people from linking to you in their blogs and having their posts with your link in it picked up by search engines either. So best wishes and happy blogging. :)

Moved to support. :)
I looked at your outputted code and I do see that required settings to block search engines spiders so that’s right.
One major issue though is you’re linking to your blog. You do it here on the forums. (You can edit your forums profile and remove the URL) I also see it here. By doing those links, you’re telling the search engines that you want your site indexed.
Also remember that not every search engine is going to obey the ‘Don’t index me’ restrictions. I really feel that MSN doesn’t while Google and Yahoo does. (You may have noted that MSN has your site pretty well indexed.)
Hope this helps,

Cheers, I didn’t know that linking my blog to my profile on sites means that it will show up in searchengines. Which is kind of silly I didn’t think about it.
However I assumed that it would only take the blog name and not some part in the text.
But ok, cheers for the replies guys. You’re doing a great job. :)
