I am building a wedding website right now and tryign to make it private. i followed the intructions to create a viewer invite, however I do not like that it integrates the dashboard for my viewer. is there another way to set up my wbsite with a viewer password that does not include access to your dashboard?

  • Hi @krysandandrew,

With a viewer password that does not include access to your dashboard do you mean that you don’t want your viewers to access the backend of the website?

You can set your whole website as private and then invite only the people you want. Viewers on your website can read and comment on posts and pages and can’t access the backend. If you have followed these steps to invite people to your website as viewers they shouldn’t be able to see your dashboard.

Another thing you can do is to set passwords to your pages and blog posts.
On your page/post editor look at the “Publish” box on the right. See down below three options, “Status”, “Visibility”, “Publish”.
Click “Edit” on Visibility, then you’ll see the password-protected option. Enter the password you want, then save the post/page.

Hope this is useful to you. If you get stuck at any step or have some questions, just let me know and I’ll be glad to help :)

I have set my website as private and then invite only the people I wanted. Those people received and email, however they were promted to create a wordpress account in order to view the website. After they did that, a dashboard appeared on the website. I would not want this to happen as I this could confuse my invited viewers not familiar with wordpress or blog platforms etc

  • Is the dashboard mentioned in point No4 of this guide? https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/#invite-people-to-view-your-private-blog

    It says:

If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to their Subscription Management page where they can manage all blogs they follow and adjust their email delivery frequency.

This is not technically a dashboard and doesn’t allow your viewers to edit anything in your blog. I’m afraid this is the only way for you to invite people to read your private blog!
