Privacy Settings Not Appearing

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I am trying to change my site’s privacy settings and I want to make my site private. However I followed the instructions on this link, https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/
and my page does not have those three options, it only says under Privacy that ‘Your site is visible to everyone’. (I also made sure I wasn’t on the privacy –> settings on a plugin enables site like it said)
Do you know if I am doing something wrong or if there is any issue? I am not sure why I don’t have all the options, there are just not the three to toggle between, but it’s probably something I’m doing I just don’t know how to fix it. I appreciate and guidance you can offer :) Thanks so much

  • Hi there,

Those settings are specific to sites hosted here on WordPress.com.

Your site at http://savannahmiller.ca/ isn’t hosted on WordPress.com, but just connected here via the Jetpack plugin. You’re using the open source version of WordPress at another hosting provider, and that version of WordPress doesn’t have a built-in option to make the site private.

Instead, you’ll need to use a maintenance mode plugin instead if you just want to take your site offline temporarily. Or if you want to restrict access to only certain people, you’ll want a membership plugin.

For more advice on the best option for the specific goal you’re after, please ask the WordPress.org community in their forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/. They’re the people who make the version of WordPress you’re using, and will have a better idea on the available options/best plugins to use.
