Privacy with Subscriptions

I would like to make my blog private. I read you can have subscribers get updates when you create a new post. However, I want to restrict my blog to only subscribers. The only way I see to do this is to go into privacy but then the readers have to have a wordpress account. Please help. I don’t want to go to another host but want a provate blog.

Here’s the link to support documentation for changing your blog visibility settings to “private”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

    3. I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose – You would use this setting to create a private blog. If selected, another area will appear where you can control which WordPress.com users will be able to log into your blog to read it (those users will only be able to read your blog, they will not get access to your dashboard to edit your blog.

I also located this entry below but I hasten to add that I don’t have any experience with this. Any further clarification must be provided by Staff.

Note that subscribers do not need to be registered with WordPress.com. Any subscription made using an email address not associated with a WordPress.com account will be sent details of how to confirm and manage their subscriptions without needing to register at WordPress.com. If you are registered and logged in to WordPress.com then you will not need to confirm any subscription. All other visitors will be sent confirmation emails. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/subscriptions/

Thank you for your help. I am struggling with this and wanted to see if there was anyway to make the blog private, but not force users to have a wordpress account.

You’re welcome. Best wishes with the blog. :)

Well I was able to play around with this and I think the only way to limit the people who can see the blog is to make it private and then have them subscribe. Bummer. Please tell me this isn’t true. I was hoping people wouldn’t have to sign up with a wordpress account to make it work.

Whoops meant to say- I think the only way to limit the people who can see the blog is to make it private and then have them – get a wordpress account and authorize.

As you wish to control which specific individuals can see your blog, is making them have a WordPress.com account really such an obstacle? Just tell them as your blog is private, they have to have an account and log in, and here’s how to do it. I created and support a blog written by a very non-technical, even techno-phobic friend, and of course she had to have a WordPress account but she’s hardly aware of it.
