Privacy/Security – blog can still be found…

    Hi,

    I have set the privacy setting which says that I want to block search engines from finding my blog. Well, this works, e.g. when I search for my name the blog is not found. But when I search for my nickname which is also part of the blog’s URL (e.g. say my nickname is “myPersonalNickname” and my blog is called “myPersonalNickname.wordpress.com” an I search for “myPersonalNickname”) Google lists my blog!
    Is there a way to prevent that behavior? I do not want my blog to be listed, not even when searching for the nickname…

    If someone has linked to your public (but search-engine-blocked) blog via their blog links, or linked to an article you wrote in a post on their blog, then search engines will find it.

    You might try asking those people to remove the links, but even if they do it will take a long time for the search engines to clear the connection to your blog. I have read that Yahoo holds on for an especially long time.

    As to preventing this from happening, either keep your blog private at all times, or just keep your files on your own computer. Safest of all would be to use paper and pencil to do your journalling.

    If you want to be anonymous don’t use your real nickname or any other name that can even be remotely associated with you – don’t tell ANYONE about your blog – don’t put anything in the blog that can be associated with your activities –

    Listen to @1tess and use paper and pencil – NOT a word-processor for your journal.

    People start “secret” blogs all the time – then they tell some friends and wonder why it is no longer secret anymore.

    :D Thanks a lot for the responses… The thing is, I do not really worry about that my blog can be found. We met some friends yesterday and I took a photo and said I want to put that into my blog. And then suddenly they freaked out that they do not want their photo to be posted. I mean, I respect that and will not put the snap online. But I explained that the blog cannot be found anyways and he said that everything can be found.
    So I tried today and was astonished that by the blogname it can be found so easily…
    Well, who cares, I will for sure continue my blog here as I love the writing and sharing with other people! :)

    Hi Doris,
    Sounds like a reasonable attitude. If your friends don’t want their pictures posted, then don’t put their images on your blog.

    Re: the pencil and paper, my brothers used to look for my diaries. I knew they would find them, and could easily pick the little tiny locks so I’d self-censor what I wrote.

    Secrets are almost impossible to keep. Even some pre-internet secrets.

    And then some things remain lost forever. Like my self-censored thoughts as a girl and young woman: I destroyed many papers and art I did.

    Your question is partly technical and partly philosophical.
