Private Blog and Domain
-
Hello — I set up my blog a couple weeks ago, and my intent is that the entire blog (including all posts) be private and visible only to me. I think I set that up the right way, as under “Site Visibility” I selected “I would like my site to be private, visible only to users I choose.” Nevertheless, every time I author a new post, it asks me to pick a “Visibility” setting, and the default is “Public.” Do I need to mark every post private, or is it sufficient that I marked the entire blog private from the outset?
Second, is it possible to change my domain name? I’m not talking about changing the “wordpress.com” part, but rather the custom part at the beginning. How can this be changed?
Thanks, Dave

You can change your username by following these instructions. Although that method means you won’t be able to change back ever.
It might be better so create a new site with the name you want and then export from your existing site, then import to the new one. This way you can keep hold of the old username, or even use it as a test blog to try out new themes and features. You will have to manually move across the items in your media library though.

OK, thanks for your response. A few follow-ups:
1. Is changing a username the same as changing the name of the site (i.e. “myblogname.wordpress.com”? In other words, if I want to change “my blogname” do I do that by changing my username as you’ve outlined? Or is it something else?
2. Any thoughts on the privacy question that I posed? Specifically, if the blog is marked, do I still need to mark every post private (since they each indicate that they are public)?
Thanks

http://latchanafamily.wordpress.com/ – is private – I can’t read it unless you invite me in
I think you are confusing a Post visibility setting with the blog visibility setting – setting a Post individually to Private means that to read it a person needs to be a “user” on your site (Admin, Editor, etc.) – if you want all your Viewers to see a Post / Page – leave it to Public, that means that all your visitors can read the Post / Page – but since the whole blog is “Private” only those you invite in can read the Post / Page anyway
I hope this makes sense
I use the Private Post option on one of my sites to keep personal info private from general visitors (the site is open but search engines discouraged) – so I can Post phone numbers and email addresses and people that are Admin or Editors (I don’t yet have Authors or Contributors) can see the contact info for who to call for public events we display at. But anyone can see what issues we had at a specific venue.

Thanks. So, my understanding is that if I’ve marked the entire blog private and do not invite any viewers (which is the case, and is what I intend to continue), then it doesn’t matter what I mark each post — everything will only be visible to me, and nothing to anyone else. Is this right?

That is correct – the site to Private keeps everyone out so only you can read it – I would leave the Posts Public since it is one less thing to mess with and since you have no viewers invited, there is none to read the Posts
