Private blog error/can't see content

  • Unknown's avatar

Users can’t see private blog, they are signed up as contributors, can see the main menu, but no posts and the menu links don’t work. Why?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Odd thing is the privately published posts don’t show as being published on the dashboard. There is a 0 for number of posts. I made one public and now it shows that there is 1 post published and logged in as a contributor I can see that post.

So, do I make the entire blog private, but the posts public?

    Thanks

I did that after reading that private posts are only visible to editors and administrators and it now works. Still the posts are considered private, because the entire site/blog is private, correct?

Also, why are the list of users different? There is the Users -> all users in the left menu of the dashboard and there is also the Settings -> Reading list of approved users. It doesn’t seem to matter if a user is approved or not. Once they log in they can see the entire blog.

    Thank you!

    Hi there,

There are a few different kinds and levels of security on WordPress.com.

The kind which you currently have implemented on your site is site-wide Privacy:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

With this setting, you can stop anyone from seeing your blog at all, or you can allow just a few people to see it, who you have to specify on this page:

    https://jgrandi.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

There are other sorts of privacy as well. You can discourage search engines from indexing your site, and you can also lock down specific pages from being viewed by using a password, or alternatively only allow them to be viewed by authors and administrators. Keep in mind that this latter option is different from the first choice. The first choice prevents the entire site from being seen. This choice is done on a page-by-page and post-by-post basis.

You can read about setting this up right here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-visibility/

Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi,

Thank you for your response. I understand the privacy settings. My question was that I have set the blog as private, meaning users have to sign up and register. However, if I set the posts as private, none of the users can see any of them. If I set the posts as public they are then visible. It doesn’t seem to make sense to me. If I set the post as public, does it go public or just visible within the private/protected blog?

Also, why are the list of users different? There is the Users -> all users in the left menu of the dashboard and there is also the Settings -> Reading list of approved users. It doesn’t seem to matter if a user is approved or not. Once they log in they can see the entire blog.

    Thank you

If your entire blog is set to private and then you further password protect a post, then not only will your users have to log in to your blog, they will need to have a password for that individual post as well.

If you set that post to visible but your site is still set to private, then a visitor will still have to enter a password to see your site in the first place, but will immediately be able to see your post.

And there are two lists of users because they serve two different functions. The users under Users >> All Users are for the normal functioning of your site, whether it is set to private or not. The users under Settings >> Reading >> Privacy are those you have decided to give access to while your site is private. The ONLY permissions they get by being on that list is that they are allowed to see your site, while the users on the Users >> All Users list might get significantly more permissions depending on what role you assign them.
