  Can I make a blog in Word press thats private for a selected group? I can do that in LiveJournal and I think Live Journal is very confusing and my group wants something that protects their writing

  Settings -> Privacy -> I would like my blog to be visible only to users I choose (check this radio button)

  You can have (I think) up to 30 members without buying the upgrade. Anyone who wants to see the blog will have to have a wp.com account (but not necessarily a blog, you can have the account w/o the blog).
