How do I invite users to my private blog without having them sign up for wordpress?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You don’t. The software MUST be able to detect who is an authorized user and who is not.

The limit is 10 invitations at any point in time. It’s a spammer prevention limit. So simply wait and then send out 10 more.
On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the step by step Learn WordPress.com blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. http://learn.wordpress.com/
The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page.

The people you invite to view your private site do not need to sign up for a WordPress.com blog: all they need is a WordPress.com account which is the email address WordPress.com uses to recognize the user, and a username of their choice.
A “real name” cannot be used online to recognize who is who, who is allowed to do what, where.
Just Google a common name, and you’ll find hundreds of people with the same name. My own name is slightly unusual, yet there are several people with the same name. If you invited me by name to view your blog, how would you know it was me and not one of the others with my same name?
The email address is used to distinguish one person from another.
Essentially that is what signing up for a WordPress account means: the person is saying, “This is ME!! xyzme @ emailhost.com.
