private blogs – sending new post notifications

It appears from my reading of the forums and support pages that there is not a way for private blogs to send out notification of new posts or comments to participants. I’m guessing that a feature that supports this is well within the technical capabilities of the happiness engineers at at Automatic so I wonder if someone has an explaination why this hasn’t been done. There may be a very good reason, and if so, I, along with many others, would like to hear it so we can put this particular puppy to bed.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The reason could be because your blog has the same settings as other private blogs and if they enable a setting like your describing then other peoples blog would also share posts & comments as well and maybe they don’t want their blog to share since this is a share MU environment.

Thanks for the response, but let’s be clear. I’m not suggesting that posts and comments be shared, only that a notification be sent to participants of that specdific private blog. I your suggesting that settings in my blog impact other private blogs, then were into a very different, and perhaps surprising to many, discussion.

If you want some sort of email notification system for users of a private blog, you need to submit that to staff directly so they can log that request.
Staff has said in the past though that they didn’t want to get into the email business. That said, since there isn’t any other sort of external service that can be used, I agree that it would be nice for staff to come up with some sort of notification system for private blogs.
One suggestion is to set up an email group in your email program with all your users in it and then whenever you post something, just send out an email.

As always, thanks for a lucid and on point response. That said, in the meantime, a email group is, of course, one option. Its a bit of a kludge in that it obviously requres a bit of manhandling, but in lieu of anything better… I can understand the hesitation about getting into the email business, but its challenging to build participations into a blog without it. Since this the absence of this feature appears not to be a technical issues but rather a design issue, I’ll be happy to submit a request to staff as you suggested. Perhaps if they could provide the feature as an $upgrade$ they might be willing to put some energy behind it. And thanks, TSP, again…

It is a technical issues of sorts, since I assume that none of the server infrastructure required to handle email issues on a possibly grand scale are set up or available, and there could be monetary issues as well. I’m speculating of course.
