Private domain

Hi. I have a registered domain name that I would like to use with my WordPress account. I have a few questions:
    1. Can I do this with the Personal Plan (2.99/month)?
    2. When I clicked on the upgrade button on the WP site, it immediately brought me to a credit card entry site. Where and when do I enter the domain I want to use?
    3. How long does it take for my personal registered domain name to become effective.
    4. Do I need to do anything about notifying my current subscribers about the change–or is it seamless for them?
    5. I assume everything else about the admin of my site does NOT change. That is, all of my archived blogs, stats, and settings remain as is. I do NOT lose anything.
    Thank you for your assistance.

  • Hi there,

    1. Can I do this with the Personal Plan (2.99/month)?

The personal plan will allow you to connect your own domain, yes.

    2. When I clicked on the upgrade button on the WP site, it immediately brought me to a credit card entry site. Where and when do I enter the domain I want to use?

Go ahead and add the Personal Plan. Once the plan is active, go to My Site ->Domains and select the Domain Mapping option. That’s the upgrade you need to connect an existing domain.

    3. How long does it take for my personal registered domain name to become effective.

You will need to contact the domain registrar where you bought the domain and ask them to change the domain’s name servers to point to us. The name servers will take a few hours to update, in extreme cases as long as 72 hours. You can leave your domain set to the free address while this is taking place and only set the mapped domain as your primary domain once the change is complete. You can set which domain is the primary on My Site ->Domains after you add the mapping upgrade.

You can use a site like whatsmydns.net to check on the progress of the name server changes.

    More details here:

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

    4. Do I need to do anything about notifying my current subscribers about the change–or is it seamless for them?

Existing followers on your WordPress.com site won’t notice a thing. Think of it as putting a new license plate on your car. Nothing about your site will change. It will just show a different address in the browser for those who look there. The free WordPress.com address will also still work, so any old shared link will still bring people to your site.

All you will lose is some search engine traffic as Google re-indexes your site at the new address, but that should return to normal in a few weeks.

Thank you for the response. I contacted the domain registrar and they gave me this reply: “If you are referring to update nameservers, then ask them for their exact nameservers, and I can give you the steps to update them….Steps : verio.com/knowledgebase/beta/article.bml?ArticleID=166
PM a Once you have the nameservers, you can update it from your end without contacting us. If you have any issues, you can reach out to us verio.com/knowledgebase/beta/article.bml?ArticleID=166″

So…I am no clearer on what I need to do. Looks like both entities want the same thing…I have no idea what the answers are…..

  • The name servers you need to use are in the mapping support document I linked to above:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM

    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM

    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

Follow the instructions in the knowledgebase article the registrar provided you to change those, and your domain should be working in a few hours.
