Private page viewable only with link?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone knows a simple way to make a private page that only people with a link to that page can view on my website?

I contacted my web designers and they can do it for a nice fee, but thought there may be a widget or some other setting I can use that will do this automatically?

If any one has any idea, that would be great.

    Thanks!

Are you interested in making a page that be visited by anyone with the link (or via anywhere the link is posted), but not visible from your site’s menu and posts?

You might try going to your blog Dashboard and under “Pages”, click “Add New”.

Under “Page Attributes” on the right, just leave “(no parent)” and “0” as the options. Give your page a title and body, then click Publish.

As long as that page you just created isn’t listed on the Menu Structure (from the Dashboard, “Appearance”, then “Menus”), it shouldn’t show up anywhere on your main WordPress site.

To find the link to an “orphan” page like that, go back to Dashboard, then Pages, then All Pages. Click the page title, and there should be something that says “Permalink” near the top. That’s the URL to use.

Is that kind of what you meant?

Thanks for the reply – yeah, that’s what I mean.

I tried it though and it did show up in the menu. I’m not sure if there is a setting perhaps my designers have it on that’s causing this?

The site in question is ShannonClarkFitness.com

Any further help would be great.

    Thanks!

Shannon, you can remove it from the menu.

From the WP-Admin Dashboard, look for a link that says “Appearance”. Click “Appearance”, and then select “Menus” from the new links that appear underneath it.

You should see a box titled “Menu Structure”. Find the page you’d like to remove from the menu, then click the link that says “Page” with a tiny arrow next to it.

You should now see an option that says “Remove | Cancel”. Click “Remove” to delete the page from your menu. Don’t forget to click the “Save Menu” button in the top-right.

Now when you visit your blog, that page should essentially be invisible.

    Does that help?

Thanks again for the prompt reply. Hmm, so I see what you are saying and can locate the item on the menu structure page.

However the menus are all faded and while I can click it, it doesn’t give me the ‘remove/cancel’ option. I think that perhaps my designers may have disabled this somehow as they created some sort of coded menu perhaps? I’m not sure if it’s possible but that isn’t working.

Frustrating if they have. I’d attach a screen shot but I don’t think i can on this message.

Shannon: I think that’s the limit of my ideas. I’ve never seen them grayed out. I suppose some templates may not let you customize them, though.

Good luck! Sorry I couldn’t help you find an answer.

No problem – i do appreciate all of your help. :) I sent a message to the designers to see why it’s doing that, so hopefully they’ll give me a response and it’ll be resolved. You did point me in the right direction! Thanks again!

Because of where you are hosted and the software you have many more options – (Plug-in’s for instance) – but you are in the wrong forum

The site you are asking about does not seem to be hosted on WordPress.COM so you need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using.
