Private post was visible to public
-
I just had someone ‘like’ a private post on my blog, and I’m frankly quite shocked and upset that anyone could read something listed as PRIVATE. How do I make sure my private posts stay hidden from other people? Do I have to password protect each one? Why is there even an option for privacy when people can actually read posts listed as private? I’m also quite frustrated that there is no direct ‘contact us’ link and that my only option here for help is through the forum… hopefully I get some answers, otherwise I’m making a new blog with a site that can actually protect users privacy. Any advice at all is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I just clicked straight through to your blog too. Are you sure it has been marked private in your settings?
Is your entire blog private or are you just marking individual posts as private? -
individual posts.
why would i have to make my entire blog private when i only want certain posts hidden?
i just made it password protected. maybe i’ll have to do that to ensure my privacy

Many people make their entire blog private. We are not to know if you are one of them or not.
If it is only a few posts that are private and not the whole blog you need to tell us which one you are talking about otherwise we don’t know if we can see it or not, and if we can help you. -
When you viewed the “Private” Post did it look something like below?
Private: Post Title Here
Posts that are marked Private will show Private in the Post title
-
Yes, it said “Private: Title”
Why is someone able to like a private post?
It shouldn’t be visible to just anyone if it’s listed as private.
-
Private Post should not be visible to the public – just checked on my test blog – and if I am logged out I can’t see any trace of the Post either
I flagged this for the staff to help –

I changed it to password protected and the reason I’m not giving too much detail is because it’s a personal post that I listed as private for a reason. The only reason I came to this forum was to figure out how to keep private things private.
I’m hoping maybe someone can explain why a post listed as private could be visible to anyone other than me and possibly list some steps to take to make sure certain posts stay hidden… because so far the “private” distinction doesn’t seem to be keeping things private.
Apparently password protection seems to keep it hidden. Any other suggestions?
I’t s just confusing to me– the function of a ‘private’ distinction, in my mind, would be to keep that particular post hidden from others… why else would that option even be available? In this case someone was able to see a post I had listed as private, and that’s a big deal to me because I thought it was hidden from the public.

A suggestion.
Was the person who liked your post someone who is able to view your private ones normally and just using a different Gravatar than usual?
I have had people leave comments on my blog who sound like they know me, only to realise later it was one of my regular commenters logged in under one of their other names. -
I have no regular commenters or followers.
I do not know the person who liked the private post… she should not have been able to see it.
So far, except for the traffic from this forum post, my blog has really only been viewed by me.
I decided to just make the whole darn thing private for now. -

You could try with a new private post (which contains no private data, just some “lorem ipsum” text) just for testing. Then the people here could check if they can see that post.
Yesterday I accidentally published a private post (no private information but a standard bit of text I want to add to every post), because after I had written it and made it private, I updated it (and clicked updated). The private setting was gone and it was published. At least I think I have done it that way. I might have done something slightly different, it was late and I’m tired (still :P), but I think this is what I did.
I don’t want to test again because I don’t want to harrass my (7?) followers with (more) nonsense posts, so I can’t check. But maybe you know if you did something similar?ps: I noticed it was published because I subscribed with e-mail to my own blog, so I see what others see in their mailbox.

Duh.. I should go to bed, you said the post was showing “private: Title”.
So disregard my comment. -
