private site viewers

I have tried and tried and tried and….. to get viewers to see my private site. Invited, used 2nd browser to create account for invitee, etc etc but nope, user cannot log in. Open their WP account, site etc then try my site and nope-‘Log In’ always log in and when I enter the user ID then go on it is back to the private site/log in. Argh!!!!!!!! Please help.

The user site is only a test to get everything working. The goal is to use it as family history with the site being private but viewable by permitted family members.

I see that
khousepitillalis added as a follower on that private site and they can view that site without any issues. -
Just tried it, I get the ‘Log in to your account.’ with the user image with ‘khousepitillal’ underneath then when I click on ‘continue’ it throws me straight back to the ‘Log In’ prompt. I would have expected being added as a ‘follower’ would let me log in but that doesn’t seem to be happening.

‘fromwalestowhales’ is the site I am trying to build. I want to keep it private but allow family members to be able to see it so I have set it ‘Private’. For family members to see it they need an invite and create an account to log into the site – amirite? I invited khousepitillal to view the site and when I tried to access via khousepitillal it required an account be created. I did that but cannot log into FWtW from that account, which I presume I should be able to do. Frustrated, I created a site under that account to see if that would help but no, straight back to ‘Log In’ each time.

I also note that a lot of people seem to have problems with letting people view private sites.

Okay, let’s focus on the login portion of this: is the person associated with khousepitillal able to log in? The account exists, so they shouldn’t have to create a new one.
If you are logged in as that user, or if they are logged in, can you (or they) confirm the correct login by commenting on this thread?

Great! The user “khousepitillal” successfully commented on this post, which should mean that user is correctly logged into their WordPress.com account.
Now, before attempting to view the private site through that account, can you describe to us the steps you typically take when attempting to view the site?
What we would like to understand is how exactly your attempts have so far always resulted in the need to log in.
For example, if you are visiting a URL, what is that exact URL? If you are clicking on a link, what and where is that link?

FWtW site is the private site I am trying to make work, I am accessing it on Firefox and all seems well.kh is simply a test user to see if I can send out and invite and that a person can then access the private site, I am accessing that on Chrome.
I sent the invitation to one of my spare account. The invite arrived so I used Chrome to try to open the FWtW web site via the following

I was prompted to create an account (details are foggy as it is many login attempts ago). Created ok, tried to log into FWtW, nope ‘private site log in’.
I have tried creating a test blog at kh to see if that helped, nope. I have tried logging in with email address, kh user name, kh account open. Every way I have tried I still get looped back to ‘private site log in’.
kh shows up in the list of invites/viewers etc as expected but nope, cannot login.
This seems straight forward but it is just looping around and driving me around the twist.

Thanks for all the details. It is clear what you’re trying to achieve. We just wanted to make sure what exact steps are you are taking to identify where the problem begins.
Since you’re working with that test account on another browser, let’s try this.
On Chrome, go to WordPress.com, log in as
khousepitillal. In a new tab (make sure it’s not an Incognito one), open https://fromwalestowhales.home.blog/.
Is the site loading correctly then, or do you see a prompt to log in? -
Closed Chrome, was in incognito. Opened plain Chrome, logged into kh, new tab, opened FWtW, tried to log in, got the prompt ‘Log in to your account.’ with pic, kh account name, and ‘Continue’ button. Bang – back to ‘Private Site’ and ‘Log In’ at the top right. Rinse, repeat :(((

Thanks for the update! I’m looking at your site’s People list, and the
khousepitillalaccount had already successfully accepted the invite. You can see that here:https://wordpress.com/people/invites/fromwalestowhales.home.blog
However, that account is showing under both “Followers” and “Viewers”:

– https://wordpress.com/people/viewers/fromwalestowhales.home.blogSince the “Viewers” user appears to be broken, let’s try one more thing and see if that shakes it out:
1. Clear out the invite from the first link.
2. On the Followers and Viewers links above, click the “Remove” button to remove that account from the site.
3. Set up a new invitation to that user, log out offromwalestowhales, log intokhousepitillal, then click the invitation link.Let us know how that goes! Thanks!

Exactly the same :(((((((((( I think it is time to mark this as ‘not fit for the purpose’ and move on to somewhere else. If I cannot get this to work then I have absolutely no hope of talking a relative through getting started.

Let’s do this, I noticed you logged in earlier as khousepitillal. When you responded again, you were logged into fromwalestowhales.
Are you able to stay logged in as khousepitillal while we troubleshoot, since that is the account having trouble?

I am answering from FWtW on Firefox while I am also logged into kh on Chrome. I have been on both for some time.
