private site viewers

  • It’s just hard to troubleshoot for us, knowing that there are two accounts involved, so let’s stick to one, the one that gives you problems. Log into that one, and let’s keep the conversation from there.

Well, they are both giving problems. FWtW is the account I want to use. kh is a test account to see if I can view my private site. It is the interaction between the two rather that the failing of one or the other. The user fh cannot log into FWtW after being invited. This just seems to be going in ever-increasing circles.

AFK for the next 4-5 hrs.

  • I, and many others, know this circle you refer to! This is very telling…

The user fh cannot log into FWtW after being invited. This just seems to be going in ever-increasing circles.

It sounds like you are inviting accounts for which you have access to their email so you can test. I can say for sure that things get very confusing to folks who try this method, and for the browsers you are attempting to sign into when clicking on links within invite emails.

It is time to forget you ever tried the above testing process. Here is what you absolutely must try next…

Invite a new person who you have not invited before. Allow them to receive the email and try to accept the invitation *on their own, with no intervention or guidance from you*. See how far they get and what they are able to access. I also recommend choosing someone who knows computers fairly well, for the sake of accuracy and efficiency.

This will greatly simplify this process, and should begin restoring your confidence in a process which works millions of times every single day for WordPress.com users. We are confident, and we’ll continue to try to help you with this. Let us know how the above instructions turn out.

Right, I don’t have anyone I can use that way so did this.

OS Linux Debian 10, Browsers Firefox 84.0.2 (64-bit), Chrome Version 88.0.4324.150 (Official Build) (64-bit), both working in private/incognito

Wanted clean window so closed and logged out of everything, closed and re-opened windows.

Just before I tried logging back into FWtW with my admin account to invite another user (to use a different email provider I have plus different browser) I decided to try one more time with the kh account.

Tried with Firefox – fine !!!!
    Logged out
Tried with Chrome – nope, exactly the problems we have been having.
    Logged out.
Logged back in to FWtW on Firefox with admin account to read this thread.
Tried logging in to FWtW as admin – nope, see above.

Ummmm, seems to be a compatibility issue with Chrome.

    Next?

  • Let’s further test Chrome.

I’m sending invites for two private sites, to fromwalestowhales (fun name, by the way!) One ends in .wordpress.com and the other ends in .tech.blog.

I’m wondering if your Chrome is set up to ignore cookies for WordPress.com if the site does not end in .wordpress.com, and this test should confirm.

Please let us know whether you make it to one, or both, sites.

Going AFK so it will probably be tomorrow.

  • That’s fine. Just update us when you get it done.

OK, here we go, try to login with kh login

https://supernoviaprivatesitetest.wordpress.com/ works, got pretty picture, other one didn’t.

Ah, whoops, used kh as that is my test but you sent to FWtW.
Tried logging into .blog with FWtW – nope.
Tried logging into .wordpress with FWtW – and got the following instead of being thrown back to ‘Log In’

This site is currently private. If you would like to request access, we’ll send your username to the site owner for approval.

Interesting -expected not to get in as I had already used the invite with kh but here we had a different response. So Chrome likes .wordpress and not .blog.

    More digging.

Got it! Pretty picture with .blog – 3rd party cookies.

Was blocking 3rd party cookies, pretty much standard as many sites spray cookies everywhere. Turned this off and got the pretty picture, turned it back on and nope, allowed https://supernoviaprivatesitetest.tech.blog/ and pretty picture back again. Lots of data flushing, closing and opening browser in the process.

    Whew!

This is awkward, how does one make this work for people with 3rd party cookie blocking without having to get them to go through the setup? Adds a layer of complication. Now I need to figure out why this works in Firefox.

  • At the moment, this won’t work if folks are blocking third-party cookies.

The issue is that the login cookie that stores the account information is for WordPress.com, but that site is under Tech.blog, so a cookie from WordPress.com running on Tech.blog is a third-party cookie.

We’re still looking into good work-arounds for this.

An interim starting point would be to add that to the invite notice to try and make people aware of that. The indiscriminate use of cookies turns people to cookie managers and blockers so I doubt this would be a rare problem.

  • Yep, that is something we’re considering. :)
