Private v Public blogs

Here’s a question some may consider stupid, at the moment I’m using private blog, but I was wondering about going public.
If I decide to go public but find I don’t like it anymore can I revert back to private blog, also can anyone tell me of possible pitfalls of going public and maybe what not to do or maybe what not to put in a public blog.

    Thank you for your help

Private = Security, and a more narrow readership.

Public = Broader readership, and possibly reaching more people who share similar interests as both you and your Blog.

You can certainly switch back-n-forth between the two. But, keep in mind that any entries that were up while it was Public would be indexed by Google and remain that way.

If you decide to go public with your blog, then the search engines are going to pick up your blog posts and such and then the world will be able find it. As you can imagine, that has pros and cons. The pros being that you are likely to make some new acquaintances and share in a rich exchange through comments and such. The cons of course is that there are trolls out there and there is always the possibility of someone harassing you through comments and such. Sad, but it happens.

You can also set your blog to public but block search engines. The thing is though that the search engines almost always seem to put up links to your blog (even if you have it set to block them) because invariably someone will post a link to your blog on facebook or twitter, or another blog and the search engines find that link. They won’t index your blog, but they will index the links to it they find at other locations.

You can go back to private at any time, but once the search engines have it indexed, it can take 6 months or more for links to disappear from the indexes, and in some cases links will linger for years. Links to the blog from other locations can be one reason for this. But, if the blog is private, no one can see the stuff anyway (except for those you invite).

You have to ask yourself if you want to be open to the world with all the wonderful things that can bring as well as the possibility of the not so wonderful side of things.

thesacredpath and ptrplease thank you both for your replies they are both informative and interesting and gives me a lot to think about.
I don’t think that at the moment I’ll go public I find that a little bit scary because as you said thesacredpath if I did go public and then decide I didn’t like it much my stuff could still be found and I’m now not sure if I want to be “open to the world”.
ptrplease its good to know that if I did go public and then change my mind I could revert back to private.

Once again thank you very much now I will have to give it some thought

No problem, glad we could be of help.

Yeah, no need for you to rush. You do what you feel the most comfortable doing when you’re ready, and then you can decide which route you want to take.

    Best of luck! :-)
