Problem adding domain name

  I am having problems buying/mapping a domain through WP.com. When I try to add a domain name I keep getting a screen that tells me that this is a paid upgrade and/or there are problems with the URL I am trying to acquire. I am quite certain that the URL I want is available.

  Do I need to purchase a $15 credit before I begin the process? The FAQs are not clear about this, and seem to suggest that I should just get re-directed to paypal to take of this during the domain registration process. I want to be sure about the proper way to go about this before I add any credits to my paypal account.

  Any help appreciated.
