Problem canceling domain, bug present. Please manually cancel.

    Hi WordPress!

I recently decided to move one of my sites on WordPress.com to Squarespace. I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to cancel the domain caitlinmccollom.com for weeks. I tried to let the domain expire on it’s own but it is still connected to the WordPress and won’t free up on the other site. On the page that comes up (with the little robot guy) that asks me if I’d like to renew or cancel, there seems to be a bug that tells me I didn’t check the confirmation box (when most certainly I did) and won’t allow me to cancel the domain. I don’t want to transfer it, I just want to fully cancel this domain so that I can use it for another site. Please manually cancel it for me, this process is taking way too long! Thank you so much for your help on this matter,

    –Caitlin McCollom

  • I can absolutely help you with that.

Just to clarify, if you want to cancel your domain caitlinmccollom.com it can take up to several weeks for our domain registrar to release the domain, and it may not choose to do so. We can’t guarantee that your domain will ever be available to you again once canceled. If you have any intention of using caitlinmccollom.com again in the future, I suggest that you do not choose to cancel.

Please confirm that you understand and want to cancel your domain. Once you have done so, I will cancel it and remove the upgrade from your account.

I would suggest that you simply leave your domain registered here and point it to your new Squarespace site by updating either Nameservers or CNAME records (which I can help you with), rather than taking the risk of losing it completely.

Please let me know if you have further questions or if anything is unclear.

    Hi Rootjosh,
I guess canceling the domain is a bad idea since I want to be able to use it immediately on Squarespace. Can you help me update the nameserver or whatever it takes? I feel like I have trapped myself and I can’t figure out how to use the domain name somewhere else. Please help me!

  • So here are the squarespace instructions for using a domain that you have purchased elsewhere:

Can you look through them and make sure that you have done anything that needs to be done on the squarespace side of things? After you have looked into that, I can set things up on this end.

Thanks for following up, the only problem is that I already paid for Squarespace to host my domain, I don’t want to pay for it through WordPress as well. Will that be a problem? I don’t understand why I can’t just get the domain name to be cleared for use somewhere else.

  • If you have registered a domain here at WordPress, the ability to point it to another webhost is included. There is no extra cost.

Perhaps what you should do is transfer your domain to another registrar:

Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

    Hi Rootjosh,

Are you saying it’s possible to have the domain managed by WordPress but pointed to Squarespace instead? That would be ideal at this point. How can I set that up? Also I suppose that means I have to renew my subscription, but now it’s saying I have an enormous late fee. Can you help me with either of these?

Thank you so much for your abiding help, I really appreciate your attention!

Absolutely. First you have to make sure you have everything set up on the Squarespace side of things (which I cannot help you with as I know nothing about their system). They have a set of instructions here:

Then just let me know, and I can set things up on our end for you.
