Problem changing color of hyperlinks

I am currently having trouble changing the font color of hyperlinked text on my site. It is hit or miss whether WordPress will allow me to change the text from the default light blue to another color. Then, when I save the updates, some of the links turn gray. I realize this may be due to them showing up as clicked links, but I am unclear why I cannot change the colors in the editor function. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.

If you are referring only to the text inside of your posts and pages you can make some changes without an annually renewable upgrade.
For changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the Text ie. HTML editor see http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/formatting-text-pt-5/
